In my opinion something on when not to lock pages could be useful here. I see nothing at Wikipedia:Protection policy, if we could come up with something here it could then be mentioned at PP with a link tot hias page (assuming it becomes a guideline or policy). Pope John Paul II got locked the day he died, Kosovo got locked the day it declared independence. This is, IMO, mistaken, certainly for John paul there was massive interest in editing that dissipated after the funerala nd that is the time we need to be allowing editors, including new ones, to edit. Certainly I am sure the John Paul is now a better article because it was then unlocked. Thanks, SqueakBox 20:00, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

In the (currently empty) ToC there is a section for "Protection" because of your comments. I agree this matters. It's a very difficult issue, and rather than immediately writing something we should seek comments widely. I am more ambivalent than you, for instance: open editing on articles relevant to a significant recent event virtually guarantees undue weight in favour of "recentism." But it also brings a lot of eyes and ears to the subject, which is valuable. Marskell (talk) 21:18, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
