Recompression is an annual gathering hosted by the Vancouver Burning Man community. It is inspired by and shares values with the Burning Man Festival in Nevada. The event endeavours to create a Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ). In order to distinguish itself from other post-Burning Man regional events, the name was coined after one planner, who would later become a Regional Representative, remarked, "I'd rather recompress than decompress."

[edit] History

The first Recompression with dance music, live performance, small art installations and recreation of the Seattle-based Fallopia theme camp, was held in the fall of 2000 as an urban event in the Gastown area of Vancouver. The second was held at a small film studio space in the spring of 2002. The event became a weekend retreat at a YMCA camp in 2003 through 2006. Recent events have involved theme cabins and a burn celebration with a burning female effigy in 2006. Following a retreat model originated by the BurninBabes and formalized by the EmoMen, the event has grown to include experiential workshops. All participants share legal and financial risk as co-producers by waiver, along with responsibility for event planning, delivery and management.
