[edit] Why does this page even exist?

I don't understand why this page exists because it's basically useless. I count that about 200 changes are made to wikipedia *per minute*. This means that any given change will drop out of even the largest "500 last changes" list in a couple of minutes. I just made a small addition to one page, and out of curiosity clicked on "recent changes" soon after committing the change. There was at most one minute (probably less) between my submission and loading the recent changes page. My change was in place 246 in the list. (In other words, 245 changes had been made to wikipedia between my submission and me loading the recent changes page less than a minute after.) This just begs the question why this page even exists. It's of absolutely no use. Watchlists are much more useful. Wopr 16:43, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Recentchanges exists for several reasons: first, without such a feature, there would be no way to evaluate and watch the real-time changes in Wikipedia pages. This is crucual for vandalism-fighting - without recentchanges, vandalism or other such edits would not be spotted unless they appeared in someone's watchlist, or if that person stumbled onto the article's history. Recentchanges also allows the changes to be filtered by category: i.e. namespace, minor edits, bot edits, etc. This can also be extremely useful in vandalism fighting, as well as watching all the real-time changes. I hope this answers your questions - watchlists are designed to be the page where you can keep track of the pages you wish to monitor, not recentchanges; however, RC still serves a critical purpose. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 22:44, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
Also, this page is included by default on the software, MediaWiki. It may be useless to some in the English Wikipedia, due to volume, but there are other sister projects, as well as external wikis, that find it extremely useful for the reasons Flcelloguy stated above. Also, disabling it really wouldn't accomplish anything, and would hurt the portion of users that still use it, so there's no reason to get rid of it, actually. Titoxd(?!?) 22:57, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
I saw this message by looking through Recent Changes for MediaWiki talk edits. Its main use is for vandalfighting; load up Recent Changes and check the diffs near the top to see if they're vandalism (possibly using a tool to make it faster). See Wikipedia:RC Patrol for more information about vandal-fighting using Recent Changes. --ais523 11:42, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
This page was even more useful back when the English language edition of Wikipedia had only a few edits per minute - most contributors used to keep a close eye on it, back then. Warofdreams talk 02:18, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
This page is extremely useful, and I have built a tool that collects all this information and summarizes it to find out what is being edited most regularly over recent time periods. If you are interested visit my page talk —Preceding unsigned comment added by W3ace (talkcontribs) 02:47, August 29, 2007 (UTC)
I agree with Flcelloguy; Recentchanges is one of the only ways to monitor the hundreds of changes to Wikipedia, and without it vandal-fighting would be extremely hard. Midorihana(talk)(contribs) 05:11, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RSS feed forbidden

I'm writing a PHP script that loads and parses the Recent Changes rss feed, but when I try to load the rss feed from a remote server, I get a 403 Forbidden error. Is there any reason why this feed would allow access to browsers, but not to scripts on remote sites?

See WP:VP/T#Wikipedia_blocking_PHP.3F. You need a custom user-agent, but make sure what you are doing is reasonable in terms of server load etc.--Commander Keane 07:46, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New field in recent changes not defined anywhere

Looking at Special:Recentchanges I see a new field, a number in parentheses, and the number is either positive or negative. For example:

(diff) (hist) . . m article‎; 14:10:51 . . (-161) . . Username (Talk | contribs) (edit summary)

This number is not explained anywhere in the Help page for the recent changes page. What is it? -Amatulic 21:16, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

It's the number of bytes that were changed in the revision. It's a feature that was just added yesterday, so it probably isn't well documented yet. Titoxd(?!?) 22:32, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Ah, that makes sense. So I guess the large-magnitude negative numbers in boldface indicate possible vandal blanking.
The "recent changes" page would be far more useful if we had some filters to apply for it, such as:
  • Show me recent changes that shortened an article by more than X bytes
  • Show me recent changes that lengthend an article by more than X bytes
  • Show me the recent anonymous edits with "External links" in the edit summary
As it is now, the page isn't very useful because it changes so fast. -Amatulic 22:39, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Aaaaah! It makes sense now! What's the threshold for the bolded text? -- Scientizzle 00:17, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

It appears that the threshold for negative numbers is -500 characters. -Amatulic 01:28, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Ah! I'd been wondering about that too. It does sound like it'll be helpful for spotting vandals blanking more easily - hooray! Squeezeweasel 22:11, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] add bengali interwiki link

Could someone add the Bengali lang (bn:Special:recentchanges) iw to this page? Zaheen 19:36, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Done; thanks. However, while we're on this topic, I've never seen the point of having all the interwikis to other language Wikipedias there. Every MediaWiki wiki will automatically (if not disabled) have such a recent changes page, and Special:Recentchanges will always work, even if the recent changes page is localized in another language. Thus, the interwiki list to other wikis would just be redundant to a list of other language Wikipedias, which can be found on the Main Page already. (The entire list there isn't even added because of length issues, and with more links, we could be facing similar problems here.) Is there any reason to continue keeping this list, or am I overthinking this issue? Thanks. Flcelloguy (A note?) 21:43, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I would say you are overthinking it. It's fine as it is, really.--Zaheen 14:33, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
Eh, okay. :-) Flcelloguy (A note?) 03:54, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

I believe that the person who added interwiki list was overthinking it. The list is totally useless fo 99% users visiting "Recent changes" and it takes around 8 kilobytes (and that's on every page load) ∴ AlexSm 04:45, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Live Ticker of Recent Changes

Would it be possible in the MediaWiki software to make a live, constantly-updating stream of text on this page? Like using Flash animation or something? It would be the best way I can think of to demonstrate the constantly evolving nature of Wikipedia. Spebudmak 06:45, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Get an IRC client such as mIRC or XChat, and point it at the channel #en.wikipedia on the server irc.wikimedia.org. There you are – a live, constantly-updating stream of recent changes. Note that there are so many changes, it scrolls past much too fast to read, making it rather useless – Qxz 06:52, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Maybe so, if you look at all changes, but what if you filter them? I remember that there used to such a ticker on one of the Wikimedia sites, showing all changes on a given wiki (back then the changes to the English Wikipedia came at a manageable rate). Brian Jason Drake 11:54, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
If you filter them, then you can do all sorts of things. There are dozens of programs out there that do precisely that - read the IRC feed (or api.php, with which you can do a similar thing) and filter it. Most of them are used for reverting vandalism; WP:VPRF, WP:VF and WP:MWT are examples – Qxz 12:04, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Limit by number of characters changed?

Is it possible to limit the RecentChanges output to just the changes that altered a certain number of characters? Reverting the most obvious vandal-deletions would be trivially easy if the page could be told to only show changes that affect more than 500-1000 characters. It would be even more useful if it were possible to see the % characters changed rather than the absolute number. Is it possible to do so at present, or should a MediaWiki feature request be posted? MrZaiustalk 21:06, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

I don't believe such a feature is possible at the time, but I'm often mistaken on such technical issues. :-) A bugzilla request should probably be filed if the system is back up. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 00:46, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Indeed, it is not currently available. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 23:23, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] recent change pages for wikiprojects?

I notice that the citizendium (whatever you may think of it) does has a cool function of creating a recent change page for articles listed under each of their "workgroups" (see here). Is there any discussion on the wikipedia of creating recent-change pages for wikiprojects? -- NYArtsnWords 19:23, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

That's just using the "Related changes" link in the toolbox, on a category page. E.g. Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:WikiProject France. They inappropriately formatted their link as an external link; I'd fix it if they allowed anon edits ;)

[edit] BLP link

{{editprotected}} Could we get a link on the page to Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:Living people to better patrol edits of BLP articles? This would help reduce the possibility of "Sinbad-is-dead type" incidents. Mr.Z-mantalk¢ 22:29, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Of course the link should be piped to a more descriptive name. Mr.Z-mantalk¢ 22:41, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
I was thinking something like User:Mr.Z-man/Recentchanges (note, that does not include the interwiki links). I would put it into the "Utilities" row, but that would make it too long.
I can't quite follow the request. What link is being suggested, how should it be named, where should it go, and why is it helpful? CMummert · talk 12:38, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
My suggestion for this:
  1. The link should go to Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:Living people.
  2. I'd suggest naming it simply 'BLP'.
  3. This would allow it to go on the 'Utilities' row, along with the similar links there (like the link to Special:Newpages).
  4. The link is helpful because specifically RC patrolling the Category:Living people category makes it easier to catch BLP violations (which might otherwise be drowned in the huge pace of the RC scroller).
Note that this suggestion isn't exactly the same as Mr.Z-man's suggestion above. --ais523 14:39, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
That would do. The only reason my example in my example page differs was to make it a little more clear what the link was, and doing so would have made it too long to put in the Utilities row. Mr.Z-mantalk¢ 15:50, 8 April 2007 (UTC)
I added the link. CMummert · talk 12:08, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bloated interface

This page is a tool for some users. Then is it so bloated?

  • I'm sure 99% users do not need interwiki list, which takes about 8 kb on every page load. For those who do, there is a Project link right there.
  • Same goes for "Meta - Wiktionary - Wikiquote - Wikibooks - Wikisource - Wikispecies - Commons - Wikinews - Wikiversity" line, which should have been on the Project page as well.
  • Another line which is not supposed to be here is "About us: Introduction/FAQ/Policy - Stats - News - Announcements - Village pump - Mailing lists - Chat". Come on, this is not the main page or some kind of entrance portal, this is Recent Changes. These links should be either in "About Wikipedia" or in "Community Portal". On a small screen when I come this page I do not see any recent changes (have to scroll down) because the whole screen is filled with these "useful" links I do not need.
  • And another weird thing is the very first link "This page". Regular users do not need that link. "Discus this page" should be sufficient. I understand that it's made this way to "fill the 1st column of the table", but it just looks clumsy

[edit] Vandalism link

[edit] Suggestion for new utilities link

I suggest that we add Special:Recentchangeslinked/Wikipedia:Featured articles to the list of utilities. It's an extremely useful link because it displays all changes made to featured articles, similar to how Special:Recentchanges shows all changes made to all articles. It's sort of like a watchlist for all FA's. Think we should add it? Pyrospirit (talk · contribs) 22:11, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Anyone else want to comment? Mainly I'm flagging this up so it appears in people watchlist again. Also please look at my suggestion above about the vandalism link. Theresa Knott | The otter sank 20:18, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
My comment would be that it would perhaps slow down the rate at which articles are defeatured, and of course swiften the removal of vandalism. So yes, why not. -- Cimon Avaro; on a pogostick. (talk) 08:18, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
As an afterthought, what would be even more cool (though sadly likely out of bounds of the softwares capabilities as present), would be a link to the featured articles in the order of which have been the longest without any edits at all. -- Cimon Avaro; on a pogostick. (talk) 08:22, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

I've been using that page a lot myself, and I've found it's quite easy to monitor. There's on average only one or two edits a minute to featured articles, which gives plenty of time to individually review each edit, determine whether it's beneficial to the article, revert or change it if necessary, and warn/thank/give feedback to the person making the edit.

Another similar page is Special:Recentchangeslinked/Wikipedia:Good articles, the equivalent page for GA's. That page is pretty much the same, but it moves a little faster most of the time. Pyrospirit (talk · contribs) 18:51, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

I think a better place to put both these would be in the section that currently reads "changes in last 1 | 3 | 7 | 14 | 30 days" which is complete redundant. Do we need a developer to do that? Theresa Knott | The otter sank 11:53, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
You're right, with how fast RC moves, it's pretty useless. But that would definitely require a developer since it's a built in part of RC. For now, we could probably just put those links in with the other utilities. Pyrospirit (talk · contribs) 17:26, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Ive asked at the VP (technical) where I know that some of the developers hang out. Maybe one will be interested in helping out. Otherwise we can put it in with the rest of the utilities. Theresa Knott | The otter sank 18:50, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Actually, section "changes in last 1 | 3 | 7 | 14 | 30 days" can be removed (by editing MediaWiki:Rclinks), but should not be removed because you can also filter RC by namespace, and then those days links are useful. Why don't you remove the whole "About Us" line which has absolutely nothing to do with Recent Changes? ∴ AlexSm 22:29, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

You got a point their, hadn't thought about that. I reckon we can probably squish it in without having to remove anything else. The only reason I suggested removing anything is because I thought it was obsolete. Theresa Knott | The otter sank 01:05, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Huh?

Every WMF wiki has a Special:Recentchanges. Why on earth are we using interwiki links at all? --MZMcBride (talk) 22:18, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

I have no idea :-( Theresa Knott | The otter sank 22:22, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Please remove these interwiki, they considerably add to the page size, and they are only one click away for those who need them: see "Projects" link in the second row. —AlexSm 16:44, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Adding (top) to recent changes

Similar to the (top) designation seen at the end of contribution edits when that edit is the most recent edit, would help vanilla RCPers identify which edits have not been reverted or undone with a quick glance... Indosauros (talk) 16:32, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Try setting "Enhanced Recent Changes" in Preferences. In any case, this should go to Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) and then Bugzilla, since only developers can change that. —AlexSm 16:44, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, the enhanced settings gives what I was looking for. Indosauros (talk) 17:03, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] wl

Please, if it's possible, add the links to other wikipedias, the most important, such the german, the french, the japanese, the polish, the italian etc. MOJSKA 666 (msg) 12:38, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Why? Theresa Knott | The otter sank 12:35, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
If the wikilinks must stay in the articles and in the main page etc., why they cannot stay in the RC page??? MOJSKA 666 (msg) 12:31, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Interwiki links show which projects have "this article". Pages that exist in all projects, especially special pages, do not need interwiki links. Main page is kind of an exception, simply because it's a Main page. Please use "Projects" link, it's just one extra click away. —AlexSm 05:32, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New pages by user

I've noticed that quite recently from the New Pages screen that the box below namespace where you could enter a user's name has gone. Why is this and can it be restored? Lugnuts (talk) 10:27, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Cutting the bloat

I recently reworked this page a bit. Please allow me to explain my reasoning behind this change.

Previously, the recent changes list did not even start until more than halfway down the page because of all the links at the top of the page. This means extra scrolling, which quickly becomes annoying. I looked at the links and found that many of them weren't related to Special:Recentchanges and were redundant to Wikipedia:Community Portal, already found in the sidebar, and Main Page#Wikipedia's sister projects.

To ease the pain, I also reinstated the interwiki list, thus providing the links to our sister Wikipedas but in a less obtrusive way. —Remember the dot (talk) 23:57, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, how much easier it is to get things done if you're an admin (see my section #Bloated interface above). However, I'm still against interwiki list, it's this simple: extra 8Kb for every user on every page load (and Recentchanges is supposed to be reloaded a lot) vs just one extra click for those few who sometimes need to jump to another project. —AlexSm 02:59, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Additional interwikis

{{editprotected}} Why isn't there an interwiki to the recent changes at the Tagalog Wikipedia? Alexius08 is welcome to talk about his contributions. 04:57, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

That's something for you to discuss, either with them directly or with MetaWiki. I don't know the answer, but they will. Thanks, PeterSymonds (talk) 16:03, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh I see what you mean. Only the biggest Wikipedias have interwikis, as every Wikipedia will have a recentchanges link. So it's not appropriate to include every Wikipedia on the list. Hope this helps. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 16:06, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Removal of "dead" link

Wikipedia:Pages needing attention is currently inactive and retained only as a historical archive, therefore the "Needy" link should be removed. Plrk (talk) 16:36, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
