Geneforge 4: Rebellion

Geneforge 4: Rebellion is the fourth in a series of computer role-playing games created by Spiderweb Software. It is released as shareware for both Macintosh and Windows.

[edit] Plot

The game differs from previous installments, as you start out as a rebel, whereas in the previous games, you start out as a student shaper. Instead, you start out working for Greta, a main character from Geneforge 3. The game starts in an exciting chase with a host of Shaper-made creations chasing the player, Greta, some serviles to protect the "prospectives" and the other two "prospectives". The prospectives are the ones deemed suitable for using the Geneforge. During the chase, the other two prospectives get into trouble and the player is forced to leave them behind due to the giant kryshakk (a stegosaurus-shaped creature that spews lightning from its mouth). Note: When a cheat was used to kill the kryshakk, it is found that the two other prospectives could not be saved regardless of anything the player did.

Eventually, after a section involving disarming a minefield, the player reaches the citadel. Then, the player uses the Geneforge to grant him/her "great powers"(namely one spell and the ability to create one fyora). The Geneforge is described as a great swirling pool of crystal. The player just has to reach down into the pool and touch the surface very lightly... and don't fall in. There are many graphic descriptions involving the player being "consumed with agony" and "fire [surging] through you, making [you] anew". Eventually, the ordeal ends and just enough of the player's mind is conscious enough to fall backwards instead of forwards, into the pool. Finally, the player recovers his/her mental equilibrum and has to go through a series of tests to get used to his/her new powers. It is stressed that the player is the rebels' "only hope" to win.

Greta then sends you on a series of missions to help the rebels. You may choose to become a traitor and help the Shapers instead of the Rebels. The rebels are doomed if you choose the shapers because "the player is the rebels' "only hope" to win". Eventually, the citadel will have to be deserted because the Shapers are going to attack it. However, the Geneforge is too precious to be left behind. Thus, you will be sent to help a caravan, holding the precious parts of the Geneforge, get past the Cairn gates. At this point, you are given instructions to seek the Rebel Safehouse. You can choose either to stay a rebel and get the information to get to Northforge, or you can betray them and give away the Safehouse hiding spot to the Shapers.

This game differs from Geneforge 1 ,2 and 3 in that the player using the Geneforge is compulsory to go with the storyline. The player is a normal human at first who is a rebel. He/she can choose out of five rebel types instead of three Shaper types.

It is similar to the other Geneforge games in that the side the player chooses always wins unless the player dies.
