[edit] Spelling

Hi there and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for your edits so far; keep up the good work. One thing I'd like to make you aware of: the Wikipedia:Manual of Style (spelling) conventions say, basically, don't favour British or American spelling, unless the article is specific to a person or place in the Commonwealth (British spelling) or America (use American). See also the Wikipedia article on American and British English spelling differences, which has a fairly good list of these. Best wishes, jnestorius(talk) 00:42, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank You!

Many thanks, Richard, for writing in to my User Page and expressing support for some of the things I've written on Buddhism. I appreciate that - plus your informing me of that particular Buddhist forum, which I may well dip my toe into when time permits! All the very best to you for 2007. From Tony (TonyMPNS)

[edit] Vivisection

Hallo again Richard. Thanks for your nice message. Yes, vivisection: I am totally opposed to it, and always have been. It is not only morally indefensible for a Buddhist (how can one try to help one sentient being by harming and killing another?), but medically useless too, as the many physiological and anatomical differences between humans and animals are so numerous and so unpredictable that one can never reliably extrapolate findings from the vivisection laboratory to the sphere of the human patient. The whole thing is quite horrendous and should have been stopped years ago. In fact, it should never have started!

Richard, if you do a search for my book, "Vivisection Unveiled" on Google, I think you can find some comments from readers (on the Amazon pages).

My book, "Buddhism and Animals", also deals with vivisection. I can send you a free copy of that book (are you in England - or America?), if you wish (I'm out of copies of "Vivisection Unveiled" - otherwise I'd send you a copy of that too, if you wanted it!).

Have a good year, Richard. Thanks again for your kind contacts. Cheers - Tony —The preceding unsigned comment was added by TonyMPNS (talkcontribs) 00:13, 9 January 2007 (UTC).

  • Hallo dear Richard. Thank you so much for your kind message on my User's Page. I am glad you find my book (and Wiki postings) of some interest. Thanks again - and keep up all your own good work! Warm wishes - Tony. TonyMPNS 07:54, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User Box

Hi, I noticed your user box for Buddhism is a little out-of-date. Here's the updated one:

This user is a Buddhist.

I'd change it for you, but I consider user pages of other's to be a little sacrosanct, and only change them in cases involving vandalism. Paxsimius 02:45, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

I saw that there was only an red edit link to User buddhist so I made one (didn't know that there was already one, nice btw). It is on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:User_Buddhist . I hope you like it. Codegrinder 12:15, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you both for your concerns. Actually i'd be delighted to have you fix the box with the one above! thank you again. regards, Richard. --Read-write-services 23:24, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Joseph Merrick

Your edit [1] blind reverted a large number of badly-needed changes to the Joseph Merrick article. Please see WP:Listcruft, WP:NOT and WP:ENC for why all of those items were removed. A number of other changes were also made. Blind reverting all of them without giving any sort of in-project rationale is simply not acceptable behavior. DreamGuy 21:51, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your input-I disagree, with your interpretation of "badly needed changes", however please see my reply on the discussion page of Joseph Merrick. I'm glad you finally discussed this with me. Best wishes.--Read-write-services 00:00, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ground Zero Cafe

I've added the photo of the Ground Zero Cafe to Ground Zero - hope you like it.

You said you didn't know how to do it, so here's what I did:

  • Copied the photo from it's source and renamed it and reduced it in size to something more reasonable.
  • Clicked on Upload file in the toolbox on the left of the screen and chose It is from a U.S. federal government source.
  • Clicked on the browse button to get the file from my PC, entered a summary, and picked Work of a US Federal Government agency in the Licensing box.
  • Once the photo was uploaded, I edited the photo page to modify the license tag from {{PD-USGov}} (for a generic government agency) to {{PD-USGov-Military}} (to specify US Dept of Defense). I also added {{ImageSummary|...}} and filled in the details as best I could.
  • Finally, I added a thumbnail to the image on the Ground Zero page.

Astronaut 11:45, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Thankyou very much! The (what I consider to be more technical side of image manipulation downloading/uploading), is like a new science to me-I'm pretty much a computer illiterate. So I appreciate the work you did. Thanks again, Richard.--Read-write-services 23:01, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Moderated nuclear explosion"

This is a technically ignorant term, but nonetheless a new (and Wikipedia-only...and not in a good way) article. It shows an abominably bad understanding of nuclear physics. What possible interest could you have in it? --24.28.6.209 03:08, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Okay, as discussed elsewhere, you convinced me. My main interest was editing it for structural and logical sense, I suppose the subject (if not citable), is a little strange. i would class the description as a low level criticality accident-but I'm no expert.--Read-write-services 03:52, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dido

I just noticed the title change a few minutes ago. She uses "Dido" as her stage name (CD's, websites, etc.), not her full name. The title of the article uses (singer) to disambiguate from other articles named "Dido." Like Fergie (singer), Monica (singer), etc. Crumbsucker 04:32, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Understood. Perhaps it's just me, but there seemed to be reasonable acceptance of the change since 07 September, so it seems a little "late" to me to revert it-but I'd still like to see what others think. Thank you for your input though.--Read-write-services 04:38, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
Errors/mistakes on Wikipedia often go uncorrected for months. It doesn't equal consensus. In this case, it's pretty clear her stage name is her first name only. Crumbsucker 04:45, 10 October 2007 (UTC)
True. I think I have more of an issue with the (Singer) part more than the Dido part though-however disambiguation causes me to worry about that as a title as well. Preferably I would name the article Dido and have the search go to that page first rather than go through the rigmarole of disambiguation-if you know what I mean-not sure if this is clear.--Read-write-services 05:08, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Not personal choice, naming conventions, whiich you are ignoring. You can use conflict resolution, but it's a pretty clear cut issue that you will lose. Crumbsucker 23:41, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Saying her stage name, birth year, and that she's a singer (maybe add English) gives enough disambiguation. Her full birth name is info suited for the lead paragraph of her actual page, which is what WP:NAMES#Names was refering to. Use Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style_(disambiguation_pages)#People for refering to people on disambiguation pages. Crumbsucker 01:04, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Dear Richard, thanks for your copy-edit of Virus. The article is much improved. Would you have time to look at Rotavirus? I have probably committed many similar crimes there. Best wishes GrahamColmTalk 16:04, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Wow! Of course, I'd be delighted. Thanks for the thanks! I'll get onto Rotavirus after completion of the second half of Virus. Cheers.--Read-write-services (talk) 21:19, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rotavirus and Virus

Dear Richard, thanks so much for your work on the articles. Seemingly minor changes make a BIG difference. You are a gifted editor. Please forgive me for deleting an occurance of while. Best wishes GrahamColmTalk 22:21, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Graham,

You are welcome. I looked over Rotavirus and rectified some structural issues, but there are a few grammatical/structure things that I would like to rejig, however in some areas I may end up changing the correct explanation of the actual replication etc. of the virus so I think I'll leave them as they are. Is there an "Introduction to viruses/how they work" on wikipedia? if not I'd LOVE it if we could create an article that explained replication etc. of viruses from a laypersons POV, as I think I understand it, then five minutes later, I just lose it again. This would be an asset to wikipedia (I think) to have such an article.--Read-write-services (talk) 22:40, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Introduction to viruses

Hi Richard, The article would have to start off with a beginners guide to cell biology. How genetic information is stored in DNA, passed onto RNA which takes the information (message), to the ribosomes, (protein factories), which make the enzymes that make the DNA. (Full circle). Then explain how viruses hitch a ride by introducing their own DNA into the cell, or, the clever bit, not bothering with DNA at all and jumping on the carousel at the RNA stage. (In can be argued that some RNA viruses only need the ribosome and the free amino acids, nucleosides and sugars in the cell). Then explain how viruses recognise the cells that they can do this in, (by the receptors on the cell membrane, every virus has its own receptor) which in turn is related to the immune system. Then move on to how viruses evolve. It would be important to stress that one virus goes in, but thousands come out. Something which is not made clear in many life-cycle diagrams and a point I like to make in my own, as you can see. The article could close by pointing out that the really clever (a very unscientific word to use in this context) viruses replicate without killing the host cell. (Hepatitis B virus does this in the carrier. Then finish with a paragraph on vaccines and antiviral drugs. The article would need to be well illustrated to avoid too many technical terms.--GrahamColmTalk 22:30, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

I went ahead and deleted Introduction to viruses, as it seems to replicate what is already contained in the virus article. We don't typically do "introductory" articles here beyond what is already in the standard one. However, you are more than welcome to contribute to related articles -- and it appears that you're well along that path already -- and if you have suggestions to improve readability, by all means, jump in. Feel free to drop by my talk page if you have further questions about the issue. Tijuana Brass (talk) 02:44, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Why???? did I ask you to delete it? were you aware that I was working on it? Perhaps you may wish to provide people with a little extra time to CREATE before you do this next time?. Maybe User:GrahamColm might be able to create the article without someone coming along and removing it before it is even partly completed. Thanks (I think).

Well, not to sound cold, but if an article doesn't meet Wikipedia guidelines, it gets deleted -- regardless of whether or not the author asks (and they usually won't, as people rarely like seeing their work erased). It's nothing personal, believe me... everyone has their work changed here sooner or later. It's just how it goes.
You may notice that it's already been re-tagged for deletion (by someone else). I'll do you a favor and change it to an AfD. That way you'll have some time to expand the article, and the community can come to a consensus on whether this is an appropriate article for Wikipedia. As I mentioned earlier, I appreciate that you're seeking to make a more accessible article on virology, but the manner in which you're choosing to do it isn't the way we go about it here, as we don't do introductory forks of articles. Expanding on the content already present at virus (and related articles) would be more than welcome, believe me.
Hope this helps. Again, if you've got questions, just ask. Tijuana Brass (talk) 03:44, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
As this user pointed out, I'm completely, entirely, 100% wrong about there not being a precedent for introductory articles here. I apologize -- I was wrong. I've asked to withdraw the nomination (I would do so myself, but since I started it, it's a conflict of interest for me to close it as well). While I still feel that it would be a wise move to make the main virus article more accessible, it looks like this has been done before as has worked well. So, good work on your part, both in the initiative to create the article and pressing a misinformed admin to not be so aggressive in deleting it.
Sorry to create trouble for you. I hope this won't discourage you from continuing to develop the article. Let me know if I can help in some way -- I'd like to do some penance here, so to speak... Tijuana Brass (talk) 04:25, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Introduction to viruses

A tag has been placed on Introduction to viruses, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

I would suggest working on the article in your userspace before placing it back in the main namespace, as I assume that you will want to recreate it. --lifebaka (Talk - Contribs) 01:48, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi Richard, I've done some more work this evening - following your suggestions. Over to you. Best wishes --GrahamColmTalk 23:48, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] user name

I am a little concerned about your user name. Are you creating articles here for pay? Its not prohibited, but you may not have a user name that advertises a product or service. If you are creating them for pay, you should declare the COI on the article talk page, at the very least. See WP:BFAQ. DGG (talk) 04:46, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

No I am not creating articles for pay. I will place a disclaimer on my user page if this concerns you, however no one has ever queried this before? I'm lost as to your intentions. My user name in no way advertises (nor will you find any allusion to my products or service on Wikipedia) or otherwise. Thanks for the attention though.--Read-write-services (talk) 21:34, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Also, just a question, what have I done here? it seems I'm getting articles deleted within one minute of creation, or while I'm still working on them and now my user name is looked upon as "suspicious"? I've been a contributor for some time now and I thought I had gained some "trust". I'm totally lost. I think it may be time to opt out of Wikipedia, because this is way too hard for what is supposed to be a voluntary contribution to a worldwide effort.--Read-write-services (talk) 21:44, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Hey, don't do that. It's one of a thousand or so Admins just doing what some Admins do. She or he was a bit rude IMO, (must have had a bad day), you've replied, that should be the end of it. You have my trust.--GrahamColmTalk 22:03, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
sorry if I sounded a little sharp. Didn't mean to, but as your user page does say you are a professional writer, it did not seem to be an absurd question. Your disclaimer above answers my question, as it will for anyone who subsequently comes here. I thank you for it. And I haven't been involved in any of the recent deletion discussions, but I did notice your name there. DGG (talk) 04:06, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

So, sadly it seems I have lost valued collaborator and friend. A younger editor left a comment today saying Introduction to virus was "good" and submitted it for peer review. Richard, we can make it better if you are still interested.--GrahamColmTalk 20:59, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Look all is okay, I am just not able to respond to talk pages because it is monitored here at my job. i am still collaborating with you Graham, no worries.

To the admin-no worries I understand that you were doing your job. All is fine. I was just really frustrated over the barrage of complaints and suspicion within a few hours the other day-I've calmed down now. Cheers to you all and I'm getting back to it now.--Read-write-services (talk) 21:26, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Radar

Hi,

I mind that you reverted my edit saying it was vandalism since I did that edit to remove the stupid sentence that you had to remove just after. When you do edit, watch what you are doing in the future! Pierre cb (talk) 03:10, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

  • My reversion was to fix the word "fiber" as it was originally "fibre" (English spelling). Sorry if that offends you. Perhaps you may need to not bother editing Wikipedia if reverts and edits hurt your feelings-it wasn't my intention. You may have reverted vandalism-good for you, But I don't believe you should be arrogantly writing to me on my talk page about something so petty. However, I will try to avoid upsetting you in the future by taking your suggestion about being more carefull on board.--Read-write-services (talk) 04:45, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
  • I'm not hurt that someone edits my work. I'm hurt to be called a vandal as anyone that cooperates to Wikipedia like me for more than two years would. You should have seen that your reversal of edition was reinputting the offensive sentence (that yourself called "stupid sentence") I had edited out. You should have done a normal edition instead and called it a minor correction. Where should I tell you that you have done something that was uncalled for but will stay in the record on wiki history of the article, if not in your discussion page? This is not your presentation page, where I would not dare input anything, but a discussion where comments and questions only addressed to you are done. By the way, "fibre" is as good as "fiber" in the English language. One usage example : Carbon fibre Pierre cb (talk) 03:36, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
I am going to close this discussion with you Pierre, as it is going nowhere and acheiving nothing. I said "sorry" for offending you and you reply by trying to correct my usage of the English language. Please move on, for both our sakes. I am considering the situation closed and finished with. I would advise you to do the same.--Read-write-services (talk) 04:14, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Pig's head gang

A tag has been placed on Pig's head gang requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Mdebets (talk) 22:29, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

I would appreciate if you leave the article there while I create it-it is impossible to work on a page that is continuously deleted. I have added refs and reasons as to why the article is of importance.--Read-write-services (talk) 22:59, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Cody Hutchings

I have nominated Cody Hutchings, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cody Hutchings. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. TRAVELLINGCARIMy storyTell me yours 01:54, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

  • Please refer to Wikipedia:Notability (people) so that you will be able to demonstrate the notability of the people you write about. If you do not demonstrate notability of the subject of an article, the article is likely to be deleted. --Eastmain (talk) 04:28, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

You currently have both a keep and delete comment on the Cody Hutchings AfD. To avoid confusion for the closing admin, would you mind striking the original "keep"? You just need to put it in "<s>" / "</s>" tags around the '''KEEP''' text in the original comment, so it would become <s>'''KEEP'''</s>". -- Mark Chovain 02:52, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Daniel Valero

A tag has been placed on Daniel Valerio requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Matilda talk 01:31, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Daniel Valerio

An editor has nominated Daniel Valerio, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Daniel Valerio and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 01:59, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Minor edits

Please remember to mark your edits as minor if (and only if) they genuinely are minor edits (see Help:Minor edit). Marking a major change as a minor one is considered poor etiquette. The rule of thumb is that only an edit that consists solely of spelling corrections, formatting changes, or rearranging of text without modifying content should be flagged as a 'minor edit.' Thank you. --Matilda talk 02:29, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

  • okay, I'm really getting tired of this-you seem to be following my additions, edits and article creations and just generally nitpicking. I have taken this all in good faith and have given you free reign without argument. However, now I will respond. Okay, I have my "mark edits as minor" on my preferences-I'll be wary of this in the future. I will also back off trying to create articles that others (as yourself) consider to be irrelevant-as it is a total waste of time having to justify every article's existence. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, though.--Read-write-services (talk) 05:37, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Demon Core: where does the name come from?

Hey. I'm a college student doing some research for a paper on the demon core, and I'm wondering where the name originated from. I can't find it in any of the sources. This seems like an important bit to get a source for, and I'd really appreciate having something to point at for the name. 134.173.60.184 (talk) 11:27, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
