Well, I wonder who decided that

It is denoted by

Re{z}

or $\Re \{ z \}$

where the second appear bigger and somehow preferred, while the more common way to refer to real part is:

The number $x\$ , defined by

$x = \operatorname{Re}(z)$

is the real part of the complex number, $z\$ , and $y\$ , defined by

$y = \operatorname{Im}(z)$
