The Reading Symphony Youth Orchestra is a musical group in Reading, Pennsylvania which performs classical orchestral music. Created in 1989, the orchestra was formed by the Education Committee of the Reading Symphony Orchestra (RSO) Board of Directors with the intention of providing experience to local teenagers in the field of classical music. Supported by the RSO and a parent association, the orchestra holds annual holiday and spring concerts, as well as occasional international tours. The orchestra has toured the United Kingdom; French Canada; and Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Prague in 2001, 2003, and 2004 respectively. The most recent tour was Italy in 2007. [1]
The orchestra for the 2007-2008 season is the largest in history, with 133 members. The concerts for the 2007-2008 season were completed on December 8, 2007 at the Reading High School and May 18, 2008 at Schuylkill Valley High School. [2]
Peter Brye, beginning service in 1989, continues to conduct the Reading Symphony Youth Orchestra. Retired in 2007 from Millersville University of Pennsylvania after 26 years of employment, Brye has studied the University of Oregon, Pennsylvania State University, the Peabody Conservatory, Temple University, and the University of Michigan. Despite his retirement, Brye remains committed to the success of the orchestra. [3]
