Reach Township, Ontario

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reach, Ontario is a geographic township and former municipality located in Durham Region, Ontario, Canada. It is currently part of Scugog Township.

The township was surveyed in 1809 as part of York County and the first European settlers arrived in 1821. There are two theories as to the origins of the name. According to the book Place Names of Ontario, the name is derived from the village of Heath and Reach in Bedfordshire, England. However, older sources indicate that was named for a Colonel Reach. The municipality was incorporated in 1850 and became part of Ontario County upon its formation in 1852.

In 1871, the Village of Port Perry was incorporated and separated from the township.

The Regional Municipality of Durham was created in 1974. As part of related municipal restructuring, Reach Township was amalgamated with Port Perry, the original Township of Scugog and the Township of Cartwright Township in Durham County to form the newly expanded Township of Scugog.
