Re is a municipality in the county of Vestfold, Norway. The municipality was founded in 2002 by unification of the former municipalities Ramnes and Våle.
It includes the places Ramnes, Våle and Revetal, and the river Aulielva runs through the district.
In this area a battle took place in 1177, which is the last one mentioned in Heimskringla by Snorri Sturluson. Graves and other findings from the Viking Age and even earlier can be found throughout the district.
[edit] The name
The Norse form of the name was Ré, and it is an old district name. The name is related to the German word Reihe 'line', and it is referring to the geological formation Raet.
