According to Vicki Lawrence's autobiography and the Mama's Family reunion, Raytown was based on Raytown, Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City. Vicki's mother is from Missouri, and she wanted to make it similar to her home state. Also, Missouri license plates have been spotted on some of the cars used on the show.
