[edit] Notability

The notability of this article's subject is disputed as of 8 September 2006.

  • Notable - Alright, I know how it looks when a biographical article is started by an editor whose username matches the article's subject. Nevertheless, I consider Beckerman to be a leading expert in the field of litigation between recording company plaintiffs and individual defendants alleged to be peer-to-peer file sharers. I stumbled into this new page fully expecting it to exist already; by sheer coincidence, had I been two days earlier, I would have started this stub myself! • At 150,000 ghits, it's a little hard to say there's not some notability there. Certainly a lot of those hits are from blogs, but I think there are a few MSM mentions too... [1] If there are several reliable sources that mention Ray, I would think that it would be hard to argue that the topic doesn't deserve a paragraph at the very least. --Interiot 13:38, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
  • I apologize for submitting the article before I'd read Wikipedia's rule on "notability". I am new to this process, and would never have submitted it had I known that its submission implicitly represented me as "notable". One's "notability" is clearly for others to judge, not onesself. The reason I submitted it was to identify myself accurately, since my name does come up in the Wikipedia, and the blog and website I author are basically the only source of hard information on the RIAA litigations. Sorry if I've transgressed. If it would be in good form for me to withdraw the article, I would be pleased to do so. Just let me know. Thanks. Best regards. RayBeckerman 11:52, 9 September 2006 (EST)
There's just a gray area between highschoolers who add articles about themselves (which are routinely deleted), and more notable people who are mentioned in New York Times and Time, who ocassionally edit articles about themselves, but whose articles are still obviously kept.
There are a number of mainstream media mentions, so I personally think the notability tag should be removed from the main article. MSM mentions I could find include CNN, Wired, MTV, ArsTechnica, TheInquirer, as well as the Variety and National Law Journal articles mentioned on the main page. And Ray's client was mentioned on television on CBS, CNN, and NBC [2]. --Interiot 16:52, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
  • OK, I'll bring this discussion to User:Mdd4696's attention, and ask if he or she'd like to re-examine what's going on here. Matt Fitzpatrick 05:02, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
    • Sounds like he's received significant media attention, so I'll remove the tag. However I'd like to have the article emphasize that the reason people know about him is because of his involvement with the RIAA lawsuits. Otherwise Mr. Beckerman sounds like just another lawyer. ~MDD4696 15:49, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
