Hi.

I was impressed by your level of excitement for preparing to be an administrator of Wikipedia.

Adminship may or may not be something you will enjoy. It's maintenance, and it's usually more tedious and less intellectually stimulating than editing articles.

Keep in mind that most administrative work is done by non-admins. Adminship is generally given to editors who are already active in administrative chores.

So we should find out if maintenance of Wikipedia it is something you like doing.

One basic administrative duty is participation in deletion discussions. Sometimes, when an article is deemed "not good enough" for Wikipedia, somebody nominates it to be removed from the encyclopedia. People are needed to help decide what to do about these articles, whether or not to delete them, or determine how to fix them.

The first thing you should do is read Wikipedia:Deletion policy and Wikipedia:Deletion process.

Then go to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion and follow the instructions on How to discuss an AfD.

Participate in AfD discussions regularly.

Please focus on solving problems, rather than simply voting keep or delete.

If you feel an article is worth saving, you should help to fix it.

When an article is fixed, be sure to report it on the deletion page for that article, so that the administrator who will close the deletion discussion won't delete the article anyways by mistake. To fix an article, address all the concerns and adjust the article accordingly. Some articles need sources, some need to be made neutral, some are written in the wrong style, etc.

As you go, if you have any questions, please post them on this page, and I'll be happy to help.

I'll also try to watch your participation in AfDs as much as I can.

Good luck on your first assignment.

Have fun.

-)

And keep in touch.

[edit] Your username and signature should match

Your signature is confusing, because it's not your username.

I recommend changing your username to match your signature. See Wikipedia:Changing username.

[edit] Re:Writing a lesson

In answer to your question on my talk page...

Keep in mind you aren't limited to writing only one.  :) The lessons written so far are displayed on the VC lessons template. One lesson that hasn't been completed yet is User:The Transhumanist/Virtual classroom/LaraLove, on Good Article development. Pick a subject, discuss it here, and if we both agree a lesson is needed for it, create its page and get started. Once you are done, I'll recruit proofreaders/copy-editors to prepare it for the mainstream. When it is ready, I'll post a notice on the Community Bulletin Board, and will post a link on the VC lesson template, and the lesson itself on the VC classroom page. The Transhumanist 03:24, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

You should probably wait until you have several thousand edits of experience in the Wikipedia namespace before picking a subject to write a lesson on. Become an expert in an area, and then create a lesson for it. The lesson needs to put things into perspective and provide useful advice, rather than just reiterate what is said elsewhere on Wikipedia. To do that, you need to be very familiar with the activity being taught. The Transhumanist 18:58, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit]  ???

No AfDs since Jan. 2.

What's up?

I recommend you participate in 1 or 2 each day that you log on. The Transhumanist 09:32, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion Discussions

I am sorry for the delay! I had not had any access to the net for the past three weeks. I've been able to access the net today and I'm sending you the details of the deletion discussions. Hopefully the internet problems get resolved sooner. :-)

-Ravichandar 07:10, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

No problemo. Glad to see you're back online. I don't think I could survive that long without internet access.  :) The Transhumanist

I've also voted in a couple of other deletion discussions.

-Ravichandar 09:43, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

I've noticed a tendency among AfD'ers to delete a misnamed article, rather than simply move the page to a workable title. That nobody before me suggested merging probably means that nobody looked around for a solution before rendering a !vote. They just read the nomination and !voted. I believe we should try a little bit harder. See due dilligence. The Transhumanist 10:28, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
Don't think of them as AfD's. Think of them as articles that need to be fixed, or problems that need to be solved. Sometimes this takes just a name change, sometimes a merge, sometimes some references (finding the ones on "Sometimes I" took only a few minutes), etc. In many cases, the amount of effort required isn't very much, and it amazes me when nobody in a discussion is willing to lift a finger to work on the article itself. When we delete an article that could easily be salvaged, we waste all the time and effort that went into developing it (costs that will have to be paid again when it is recreated from scratch), so we should think economically about Wikipedia's resources. See time and motion study. The Transhumanist 10:28, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm pushing a collaboration to complete the list of basic space exploration topics.

Should be fun. Drop on by.  ;)

Also, see my post to User talk:Quiddity#Basic topic lists if you want to delve in deeper.
