The Australian Bureau of Statistics in the national census categorises atheists under "No Religion". The 16% of Australians that fall within this category also include Humanists, agnostics and rationalists.
In 1983, the High Court of Australia defined religion as a complex set of beliefs and practices which point to a set of values and an understanding of the meaning of existence.
