Rashomama is the twenty-first episode in the sixth season of the popular American crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which is set in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Nick, Greg, and Sara leave a car full of evidence in the parking lot of a diner, where it is stolen while they eat. With almost no physical evidence remaining, the CSIs attempt to crack the case using memory and deduction while waiting for the Internal Affairs Bureau to take their statements. Each investigator's recollection is colored by their own unique viewpoints.
[edit] Trivia
- The title of this episode is a reference to Rashomon, the film by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. A key element of the film is the difficulty of determining exactly what happened from conflicting eye-witness accounts. This is mimicked in this episode by four of the CSI's recounting the events at the scene from their own perspective, each of which differs in its interpretation of the events. And each of which adds their own zest to it.
- "Rashomama" is also the title of episode 18 of the American sitcom Mama's Family which also follows the Rashomon formula of multiple eyewitnesses to the same event with conflicting stories that must be reconciled.
- The "grease monkey" who stole Nick's car is called Michael Shoemaker. His name in German would be Michael Schumacher. Schumacher besides being a driver also worked as a car mechanic earlier in his life.
- When Greg, Sara, and Nick are recounting their version of events at Cupid's Kiss, the background music are from the award winning film American Beauty; the episode shares many similar motifs with the movie, such as recurring scenes with roses and even Nick mentioning the words "...American beaut[y]...".
