Hello Rappelz players. Feel free to help me out with this page. It would be nice if someone added screenies or added more to the races/classes. MrTrubak 03:04, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

I've added the Rappelz logo, and I'm going to spend some time later working on the article if I can. Dinnerbone 03:08, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Guild & Chat Systems and Article Order

I have done some pretty extencive minor editing (A sentence here, a re-wording there. ect.) and hopefully improved the article, however I have some suggestions which I would prefer a more experienced user to take care of.

  • 1) A sub-article on the guild system should be added
  • 2) A sub-article on how the game chat works including a chart od prefixes such as % - guild chart, ! - shout, $ - advert chat, # - party .
  • 3) A re-ordering of the article, on multiple occasions the article refers to something that is described later on in the article but someone that was reading the article in the correct order and without any prior knowledge wouldn't understand.

Thanks ZLiang 20:04, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Just to finish the chart:
% = guild chat
! = shout chat
$ = advert chat
# = party chat
"<username> = whisper
However I'm not sure if publishing a chart like this on the wiki would be relevant (it would be going quite deep into the Rappelz universe). Zyppora 14:02, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] pets

The pets section should be expanded, I'll do that now.--LizardPariah 06:43, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Actually I think it deserves it's own chapter, like Races, because of it being such a defining feature of the game. Also, I seem to remember that Tortus, Pantera and Poultry are the only Basic pets, and that the rest sans Angel and Kentauros are Common pets. I'd have to verify this though. Zyppora (talk) 09:26, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] GAMEPLAY

Someone needs to write a nice, concise section explaining what the gameplay is like. Is it a grindfest? Mission based (like guild wars)? What? Come on, get off your a**es and write a good article.

[edit] 2nd Tier Classes

As of October 4th, 2006 the English names of the 2nd tier classes are purely speculation made by players in the forums. Until this is official I don't think that the 2nd tier classes should be added. MrTrubak 01:15, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

The second tier classes go as the following. Holy Warrior ---> Knight, Soldier ; Cleric ---> Bishop, Priest ; Breeder ---> Master Breeder Fighter ----> Warrior, Archer ; Kahuna ----> Druid, Battle Kahuna ; Spell Singer ----> Spirit Singer. At least that is all they have out right now. If somebody wants to add this they can. 151.196.54.165 21:35, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pokemon Reference

I've never heard of Rappelz being compared to Pokemon. Also, why is it compared to Pokemon? It is because of the catching of pets? If so, that is really vague and almost every mmo has a pet system these days.

Frankly, I don't know either. To me, it feels more like something like AD&D where some classes have familiars or animal companians. I'm going to remove it since you're right, it's speculation. --Wirbelwind 02:35, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
The reason for this is not because Rappelz has pets but the manor of which the pet system is designed. You catch pets. Then you can recall them or summon them. As the pets gain levels over time they Evolve into more powerful forms of the pet. And as they level you can teach them new skills based on what kind of pet they are. This is why it is compared to Pokemon. The system is different then pets in other games and the pets are very similar to how Pokemon behave. --Nebulogic 13:57, 22 October 2006 (EST)
But similar systems have existed. For example, first one I can think of is Lufia II, where you find capsule monsters. The capsule monsters can be switched out, have different abilities, evolve into new forms (5 forms in all), etc. The game is published a year before Pokemon, meaning Pokemon isn't necessarily the first, just the most known due to its current popularity. --Wirbelwindヴィルヴェルヴィント (talk) 19:48, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
"just the most known due to its current popularity"- exactly. Pokemon is the most well-known of that genre, and therefore it often receives comparisons to Rappelz. MrTrubak 00:21, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
I disagree with your argument. Just because something is the most popular but not the first doesn't mean it's invalid to make a comparison. For example, the most common architectural idea for computers is the Von Neumann model. It's named thus because most believe John Von Neumann was the first to write about it. The concept was written about several times prior (Neumann's paper was written in 1945) but Konrad Zuse mentioned the idea in 1936 in a paper. J. Presper Eckert wrote a paper about it in 1943. Does this mean anyone who makes a comparison to it and referrs to Von Neumann is wrong? How about if you call it "Eckert's model" who mentioned it before Von Neumann? It is a perfectly valid comparison and you are discrediting it simply because you don't like the implication of it. Comparisons arise so people can relate something to something else that is more familiar. Pokemon is much more familiar to most then Lufia II. It only makes sense to reference it to the more popular known subject. And for the record I am not a fan of pokemon, but I'm trying to view this argument as an unbiased position. --Nebulogic 20:06, 27 October 2006 (EST)
I certainly don't mean that it shouldn't be compared to Pokemon. I just mean that it should be mentioned as a game with pets, where they are trained etc, without listing Pokemon or really any other game, but let the reader make the connection themselves if they wish. --Wirbelwindヴィルヴェルヴィント (talk) 06:45, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I think the Pokemon reference is unnecessary. Just as Wirbelwind said, the reader should make the connection themselves if they wish. -jeffk- NOV04/06

[edit] Criticism section

I just cleaned up the Reviews and Community reaction. Should be more neutral now. 68.217.63.172 03:18, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure why all these Korean MMORPGs have criticism sections, but unless it's encyclopedic and can be written neutrally, it should be removed. --Wirbelwind 02:41, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

The first paragraph in the criticism section needs to be typed in passive voice or at least not in first-person. It just doesn't seem neutral. Secondly, the last paragraph about "fairly high minimum requirements"... how about changing it to something like "The minimum requirements are considered fairly high in today's standards." -jeffk- NOV.04/06

Is all this accurate? I see no reference.--LizardPariah 01:22, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

What happened to the Criticism section it'll happy try my hand at it, I am not familiarized with working with Wikipedia's Code. - 02/24/08 YaguerYaguer (talk) 17:55, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

The engine is not "speed tree" they do use speed tree but to call the tree engine the graphics engine is incorrect. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.79.126.242 (talk) 01:44, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

The description for the Spellsinger class is very misleading and could use a change. Descriptions like these from people who have not played them are precisely why they have such a poor reputation. Although their basic pet passives (creature mastery/breeding/raising/etc.) are in between breeders and sorcerers, Spellsingers are not a cross between the two. Rather, they are closer to a combination of Fighters and Kahunas. They get abilities like Log Split, Virulent Arrow, Scorching Flame, Neutralization of Darkness, and pet versions of the powerful Kahuna Fire/Thunder/Ground/Water buffs. So while they have access to a wide array of spells, like a Kahuna, they also have skills with axes and bows like a Fighter (just crossbows as a SS, though longbows become an option in the third-tier classes.) And on top of this we get stat buff spells for our pets, which is where I can see your breeder/sorcerer analogy coming from again. In a way, we're a combination of all four classes. Next, their damage output is NOT poor. My level 42 Spellsinger and level 32 skeleton pet, when combined, easily outdamage fighters and striders many levels higher than me. So basically, a Spellsinger is a jack-of-all-trades. They have a huge variety of skills and buffs which allow them to play many roles in a party, and can potentially create the strongest pets possible. Their main weaknesses are that most of their skills' max levels aren't as high as the dedicated classes that they come from, and that they have extremely low soloing ability due to a lack of heals. However, their sheer variety sums up to form a package that I've found to be much stronger as a whole. --Yoten

[edit] Logo

I've added the new Rappelz logo

[edit] A date needs to be added

In the Reviews and Community Reaction section, one line mentions problems with users patching after a specific date; however, the date is not mentioned and I, unfortunately, don't know it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Darkwhistle (talkcontribs) 15:59, 13 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Fan pages

I really dont think this page

is needed.

Reasons: 1. It is French and this is an English encyclopedia 2. It is a forum with only 50 users —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Neoddr (talkcontribs) 14:42, 15 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] The info is totally bad with many mistakes

Firstly, there are many fundamental mistakes which I do not want to mention. The largest of mistakes being Gaia Fighters are able to use charge shield. There is no such skill as charge shield and Deva Holy Warriors have a skill called shield charge. I hope someone who actually plays the game comes out and edit it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 58.166.127.177 (talk) 05:32, 26 February 2007 (UTC).

I made a few correction in the class description, but it still needs improvement. TideUltra 22:38, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Memory Leak

"The client may sometimes suffer from a memory leak, generally happening after an extended period of play, in most cases causing slowdown (or lag) so bad the user is forced to restart the game. This is reportedly fixed."

I altered the above to replace the term memory leak with poor memory management. The description does not fit the symptoms of a memory leak, many game performance problems are incorrectly labelled as memory leaks by the public. By proper definition, a memory leak cannot occur until the program is clossed, at which point if it failed to free up allocated memory, a leak has occured. The only solution to a memory leak is to restart the computer, given that this problem was fixed by restarting the game, its not a memory leak. Mloren 08:21, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

You might want to read Memory leak carefully. The program does no have to be closed to develop a memory leak. If the program keeps control of memory it's no longer using, it has a memory leak. Of course ever increasing memory usage is not a sure sign of a memory leak since there can be other causes, as the article mentions. But it can be a specific example given in article is is "where the program is left running, and consumes more and more memory over time (such as background tasks, on servers, but especially in embedded devices which may be left running for many years)".
I dont think a strict definition of memory leak exists. I would say you cant really have a memory leak until the program is closed because you cant say for sure its not going to free the meory up at some point in the future. (ok techniocaly if you go throught he code yourself, you could work it out if it ever will, but this is never done. memroy leaks are detected when the programe shuts down and not before). While the leak itself of course occurs during run time, you cant completely say that its failed to free it until the program has closed and all oportunities to free it are gone. I think this is very subjective however. Mloren 10:08, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Mloren. A memory leak DOES accur, After the game is closed, unbearable lag starts, you cannot open anything for atleast 7 minutes unless you restart. 86.129.253.67 18:17, 12 June 2007 (UTC) thanks. =)

Incredible lag after the game is closed does not mean there is a memory leak. There could be all sorts of causes for this, and memory leak is just a common assumption. Infact if performance improves after 7 minutes, then its NOT s amemory leak since they are not repaired until your computer is restarted. What is far more likely is that when you close the game, it must perform a large number of operations to proerply shut down. A not uncommon practice is to shut down all graphical elements of the game so it appears to be closed, but in actual fact its still shuting things down for several minutes, unseen behind the scenes. [edit] the Reviews and community reaction part has nothing to do with Reviews or the Community

This artical has nothing to do with reviews or community reaction just the problems it has shouldnt it be changed to Criticism instead

[edit] Epic 4

Yea hi. I updated the Wait for Epic4 section with the release of the epic4 client and when it will come out. Head over to the Rappelz website and it is the head news and its even in the forums as a post by tanda. Oh and thank you to whoever posted the "July 27th" date on there. I forgot the actual date so thank you very much.

I started to update the article to E4 a week or so agp with the pets and mounts section (the only E4 before that was the new classes) Thanks to those who have been continuing the E4 updates and especially to whoever got the new logo. Everyone, keep the updates coming. Mschac1 20:35, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Geography

Added a new geography section + map. Not the latest epic 4 one though. Phyber 05:45, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Can the person who keeps removing Geography information please give reasons why? I thought it would be nice to have the map of Rappelz included within.

I added a section for Geography again. If anyone has any suitable images to add, they're free to. Also, please read and review, and enhance where applicable. Zyppora (talk) 15:21, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fan Sites

I would like to know why the unofficial fan/info sites keep being removed. I didn't put them there but they seem helpful and the WoW page, which has been rated a good article has some. Mschac1 20:35, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Complete rewrite

I've taken the liberty to begin rewriting sections of the article. It's an absolute mess at this point. I'm considering tossing that whole "Reviews and community reaction" section out, as it has absolutely nothing to do with reviews at all. It could be re-filed under a technical problem section. Furthermore, some of it is entirely unsubstantiated, and quite a bit is in 2nd person (what is this, primary school?). What do people want done to it and does anyone have contributions to add? --Anon 121.209.160.15 13:27, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

I've edited the introduction as it seemed untidy and a little confusing. I agree that the "Reviews.." section needs to be drastically altered or removed completely. I've never liked the tone of that section. Many of the problems discussed would probably come from poorly managed or low-grade computer systems. An upgrade to my RAM fixed most of the problems noted (although the game occasionally sticks in Processes after it has been ended). Many sections need to be cleaned up and have biased points-of-views removed. I do like the more recent changes! MageBunnie 03:28, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

In due time, I'll get around to working on a full rewrite. I will create a technical detail section as well as technical problem section and summarize the arguments, full with citation tags so that people know they can delete it if no valid source is found. The article is still a pretty big mess, but we can salvage it. Thankfully, poorly-written is not a criterion for deletion.
Does anyone have a good source for the classes? I have been editing them as a Rappelz player with some knowledge of the subject, but I can't really cite myself. It's that much worse because other players may be inclined to join the editing if it becomes a respectable editor and cite Sorc or Spellsinger as "the best" or make other questionable alterations to the uncited information. --Anon 121.209.160.15 07:27, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
The Rappelz forums have official, LOCKED, posts by the game moderators themselves on the skill sets of each class (eg: Gaia). This, and the other class skills, are under "Guides". I don't know if quoting a forum is acceptable, but as I said, the posts are made by GMs and locked.
I only joined Wikipedia as the guide and it's inaccuracies/bias have been irritating me for months, and I'd like to attempt to do my bit to put some sort of order to it all! We shall indeed save it! MageBunnie 12:02, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
Err, those are for Epic3. Also, I am more looking for sources that give a description of the class, since evaluation based on a skill tree is more or less WP:OR. I'd just cite the skill trees at SpartanCommand if I could get away with it. Also, as a player, I know that can be somewhat misleading, since the skills don't tell you what classes do. Still, I'm going ahead with my edits of class descriptions to make them accurate and NPOV and then worry about citations. --Anon 121.209.160.15 13:25, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
I've added a bitty about classes, levels and overbreeding, as per the 'clarify' that was there. Figured I might as well throw in a subchapter about it. Zyppora (talk) 11:15, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Tags placed on article

Looking at the article history, it appears I put the tag on the article on October 21. It does seem like a lot of good work as been done on the article, especially regarding the {{fiction}} tag.

Currently, as the article now stands, the primary problem is that it does not have the required secondary reference sources. Using the game or company site as a reference is only permissible to verify what the company says about itself. It does not satisfy Wikipedia:Notability, Wikipedia:Verifiability, Wikipedia: No original research, and Wikipedia: Neutral point of view as described below.

These are four fundamental policies involved in justifying any article. The first, Wikipedia:Notability covers topics. It asks whether the topic is notable, by asking whether there exists reliable, independent sources which treat the subject in detail and stresses that sources on Wikipedia should be secondary sources. The answer here is unknown, since none have been cited in the article. Although it probably is notable, the article needs the citations showing that it is. References to the company game site do not satisfy this.

A second policy is Wikipedia:Verifiability . It speaks to material in articles, rather than the topic as a whole, and requires that any reader be able to check that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source. "Editors should provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is challenged or is likely to be challenged." "Any edit lacking a source may be removed." The burden of providing verification so is on the person adding the material. "If no reliable, third-party sources can be found for an article topic, Wikipedia should not have an article on it." References to the company game site do not satisfy this.

This works hand in hand with the last two policies, Wikipedia: No original research and Wikipedia: Neutral point of view. The former, as the name implies, prohibits original research: "Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought, nor a forum for promoting one's own point of view; all material must be verifiable" and requires sourcing to show that you are not publishing original thought. The latter requires that material in articles represent "...fairly and, as much as possible, without bias all significant views (that have been published by reliable sources (Wikipedia:Reliable sources). This is non-negotiable and expected on all articles, and of all article editors." If your only source is the company site, then these last requirements are not being addressed.

As you can see, all these policies have in common the requirement of citation to independent, reliable, secondary sources. To help with these issues, Wikipeida has guidelines on how to cite sources and on what constitutes a reliable source.

So, as I see it, the primary tasks are to fulfill the guidelines listed above that are generally necessary for all articles on Wikipeida.

Hope this helps. Regards, Mattisse 14:01, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Is playing without paying fun?

If I understand it correctly, the company behind this makes money solely by selling the players special items for real money. Is it possible to be successful in this game without paying anything? Or will your player avatar be a total loser without those special items? 88.68.220.194 (talk) 19:00, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm currently playing a Lv56 Dark Magician without paying a penny. It's true that life is easier if you just spend a few bucks on helpful items (although the Cash Shop is quite expensive, to be perfectly honest), but the 'total loser' remark definately does not go up. Items to be bought include: Stamina Saver: helps you level up faster, Respecialization Potion: gives back all Job Points and allows you to pick your skills again, Lydian: a ride for faster movement, Hidden Village Pass: a place where items are cheaper. They're all helpful items, but they can also be sold (and thus bought) with in-game currency (although they're expensive, Stamina Saver goes for about 3-4 million last time I checked). Not buying them will just make you take a little longer before you achieve the same level. Zyppora (talk) 14:37, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Comparisons

Is there anyone here who has played both this game and Dungeon Runners? I play DR on an on-and-off basis, and I am wondering what Rappelz is like compared to that game. Thanks. Groogokk (talk) 10:42, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Lots of differences. DR has instanced dungeons, while Rappelz has persistent areas (meet other non-party people outside of town). DR allows you to learn skills from any class, while Rappelz restricts you to a skill tree for that class. Rappelz has a pet system (one of the better ones, IMO, and worth checking out Rappelz for), while DR doesn't have any (I think). DR is in a subtype of MMOs along with Guild Wars and Mythos (in that they feature public "lobbies" and instanced areas), while Rappelz falls under the more general "asian grindfest" template. If you've played a Lineage 2-type MMO, you'll get the idea with Rappelz. Brownspank (talk) 08:23, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] European Servers?

"A European version in French and German is planned for open beta on 30th January 2008." Does anyone have any news concerning this? It's way past 30 Jan 2008, so something should have come up. If this turned out to be false, it's better to remove this from the article. Zyppora (talk) 15:12, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

The European version has been live for a while (I don't know if they actually kept the deadline): http://de.rappelz.gpotato.eu/ for the German version and http://fr.rappelz.gpotato.eu/ for the French one. --Εξαίρετος (msg) 23:06, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I've updated the Versions section with some references and rewrote the announcement into a statement. It looks like the German and French versions of GPotato don't share their userbase with the English version. I'm gonna see if I can find out just how different these versions really are (and the painful part will be having to download the client again -.- ). My question: would summarizing these changes be relevant, as this is the English article, and there are German and French versions of this article? Zyppora (talk) 09:27, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Epic 5

I updated the Epic 5 info, since more detailes were released by GM Tanda on the official website. Cpt.Domovoi (talk) 15:11, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Which page would this be on the official website? 12.174.171.101 (talk) 10:03, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Banking Systems

The Warehouse system is not even mentioned in the article. It's part of the core game play and should be mentioned. 65.125.15.94 (talk) 17:21, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Inventory management is one of the core aspects of any MMORPG afaik. It's not specific to any single MMO out there. Perhaps a brief mention about the warehouse being shared through characters on a single account (and on the same server) would be in order, but I don't really see the relevance. 212.159.200.163 (talk) 10:28, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Comparison to other MMOs?

From the article: In general, these games (including popular titles like Rappelz, Silk Roads Online, and others) offer a limited scale version of the scope and game experience of larger subscription games like World of Warcraft, with less general content (new dungeons, items, quests, etc).

I'm wondering if making a comparison like this should be in the article. It pretty much makes Rappelz (and SRO) look like inferior games compared to WoW (when in fact this is quite subjective). I'm thinking taking the 'like World of Warcraft' part out just to make it more neutral, as the rest of it seems quite factual. 192.87.3.14 (talk) 07:09, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
