Rapid transit in the United Kingdom

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Transport in the form of rapid transit has been very varied throughout history in the United Kingdom.

A common misconception is that Merseyrail is a rapid transit system.[citation needed] This is not the case as it is a suburban rail system and forms part of the National Rail network.

[edit] Metro

In terms of metro systems, the United Kingdom hosts the first and third metro systems in the world, which are the London Underground and the Glasgow Subway, respectively.

Other systems include the Tyne and Wear Metro and the Docklands Light Railway, a fast light rail system which is grade separated and serves the Docklands area of London, as well as parts of East London.

[edit] Tram

There are many tram systems in the UK. These include the Sheffield Supertram, Tramlink in South London, Nottingham Express Transit and the Manchester Metrolink. There are also plans for future new systems in Leeds, London and Edinburgh, amongst others.
