Ranoji Scindia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ranoji Scindia[1] (died 1745, Shujalpur, Shajapur district, Madhya Pradesh) was a Maratha general in India, who gained a large measure of independence from the Maratha peshwa. He began the fortunes of the Scindia family, who became Maharajas of the princely Gwalior State founded by Ranoji. The Scindias are still a prominent political family in India.

He started life as Patil of Kanherkheda (Kannerkhera) [2], a small place in Satara District, Maharashtra, east of Satara. He established himself in Malwa, as the Marathas took it over from the Mughals.[3] In his part of the region, around Gwalior, he was outside the effective power of the Maratha Empire. His sons were to play an important part in its subsequent history. Madhavrao scindia's sons name is Jyotirao ditya scindia.
