Randy Scott Wittman (born October 28, 1959 in Indianapolis, Indiana) is a retired American basketball player and the current coach of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves. A 6'6" guard, Wittman played college basketball at Indiana University, and was selected by the Washington Bullets with the 22nd pick of the 1983 NBA Draft. However, he never played for the Bullets; instead, over a nine-year NBA career, he played for the Atlanta Hawks, the Sacramento Kings, and the Indiana Pacers.

[edit] Playing career

Wittman spent the early portion of his career with the Hawks, eventually working his way into the starting lineup. However, in the later portion of his career he became a journeyman player. For his career, he averaged 7.4 points per game and shot just over 50% from the field.

[edit] Coaching career

In 1992, Wittman began his NBA coaching career as an assistant with the Indiana Pacers. He spent one season in Indianapolis and another with the Dallas Mavericks. Wittman spent a long portion of his coaching career as an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves from 1994-99. He helped in the development of Wolves' star Kevin Garnett. Wittman served as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers for two seasons, from 1999 to 2001, compiling a record of 62-102.

On January 23, 2007, Wittman became the head coach of the Timberwolves, succeeding Dwane Casey. Wittman is quite familiar with the team as he was an assistant coach for the T-Wolves on three different occasions, totaling parts of ten seasons, including the first half of the 2006-2007 NBA season. Wittman also was an NBA assistant coach in Orlando, Indiana and Dallas.

Wittman won an NCAA championship playing for Bobby Knight in 1981 and was the Big Ten Player of the Year in 1983. He is a member of the Indiana University Hall of Fame and was named to Indiana’s Silver Anniversary Basketball Team in March of 1996.
