Hennepin's population is 1.1 million, which is 22 percent of the state's population and about half of the population of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Minneapolis is the county seat.

Johnson, a member of the County Board since 1979, represents the suburban cities of Bloomington, Eden Prairie and Richfield.

Commissioner Johnson was re-elected chair of the County Board for 2008. He chaired the County Board previously from 1997 through 2000 and again from 2004 through 2007.

Johnson has been re-elected eight consecutive times to represent his district. He has served longer on the Hennepin County Board than any other Hennepin commissioner since the county’s formation in 1852.
