Random is an R&B vocal group who won the Australian version of The X Factor on 15 May 2005. During the competition they were mentored by judge Mark Holden.
The group consists of:
- Xylocaine "XY" Latu, (born 13 January 1979 in Tonga) from Logan Central.
- Andy-Iese "Jesse" Tolo-Paepae, (born 19 January 1984 in Australia) from Kingston.
- Wayne Tauvao, (born 12 December 1985 in New Zealand) from Kippa-Ring.
- Tasesa Junior "TJ" Tauvao, (born 31 May 1988 in New Zealand) from Kippa-Ring.
- Donald Tauvao, (born 12 October 1988 in Western Samoa) from Redcliffe.
Xy and Jesse arrived at the Brisbane auditions as Rough Diamonds – while TJ came to try his luck as a solo artist, with brother Wayne and cousin Donald in tow for moral support.
The five, who had met briefly before at a youth talent quest and at a K-Ci and JoJo concert in 2004, soon got to jamming in the queue and shortly thereafter, Random was born.
The group released their first single "Put Your Hands Up" after their The X Factor win. It reached #7 on the Australian ARIAnet Singles Chart on the week of June 19, 2005. Their second single, "Are You Ready", has peaked at #36 in the same chart in September. They released their self-titled debut album on October 9, 2005, but it only reached #79.
The group performed at Australia's biggest Christian music festival, the Australian Gospel Music Festival Awards 2006.
