Rana Raslan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rana Raslan is an Arab citizen of Israel from Haifa who was named Miss Israel in 1999. This was the first (and so far the only) such case in the history of Israel. [1][2] In Israel, the official title is "Malkat Hayofi" - Israel’s Beauty Queen.
The then Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu commented the nomination as a feat of democracy in Israel, while some Arab and Israeli journalists viewed this as a pre-electional political move. [1]
Rana Raslan describes herself as a "secular Muslim" in responding to accusations of Muslim fundamentalists in immorality (regarding the bathing-suit part of the pageant). [3]
She took part in the 1999 Miss Universe contest. [4]
