Braving Adversities/When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going
Referred to as Speed Demon and Master Strategist by The Economic Times, Mr. Grover was born in a village near Lahore, (now in Pakistan) in 1945, his family migrated to New Delhi at the time of partition. Braving all adversities, he pursued his academic studies. His academic brilliance was reflected in his extraordinary scores at the higher secondary level and stood him in good stead to gain admission into the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, with a scholarship.
While he was in Pilani, Electronics was the subject that captured Mr. Grover’s attention. He used to travel every weekend to Delhi where he would buy a radio kit, assemble it all through the week and sell it in order to raise some pocket money. He also used to tutor his fellow classmates to earn some money, which would help him pay for his education.
The Daily Grind/Time to Ponder
Grover started his career as a Mechanical Engineer with IBM and had been a field engineer for over 10 years. In IBM, employees generally grow in one area and continue to specialize there. Thus, Grover became the last word in fixing Computers. In 1976, India was in a state of political turmoil with Emergency affecting the Indian industry adversely. Multinational Companies (MNCs) were either being shown the door or had decided to move out on their own. It was at this time that Grover decided to exit the company and set up own venture. Eventually, IBM left the country in 1978.
Grover and two other senior executives who had left IBM decided to strike out on their own and make their hands dirty working on machines that IBM left behind. They knew that IBM was on its way out, but the systems IBM had sold were still going to be around with no one to provide the much required service and support for them.
Innovation/Success Unlimited
They brought to life a small organization on August 15, 1976. They decided to call this small organization, Computer Maintenance Services Company - “CMS”. The rest is, as one would say, history, Glorious History, for, the men - beyond the grit and determination - had a vision......a vision of creating an enterprise that delivered technology, quality and innovation with the single-minded focus of superlative customer satisfaction.
What began as an idea for survival has eventually gone way beyond survival and became an idea for undreamt of success! What started as a small venture actually became the cornerstone of an entire industry - the successful, enterprising and world-renowned Indian IT industry. Yes, CMS was one of the first companies that became the torchbearers for what is now a multi-billion dollar industry!
Looking Far and Beyond
To grow as a third party Maintenance Company, CMS diversified into other brands e.g. Digital, NCR, and Unisys etc. To learn newer systems, get the technology and spare parts, CMS formed alliances with third party companies in UK, USA etc. At the request of customers, CMS continued to diversify into more and more solution areas, to become the one Stop Solution Centre for them.
From a small beginning almost 30 years ago, CMS came a long way to with 10,000 employees, with presence in over 250 locations nationally and is the largest Third Party Maintenance Company, System Integrator and Solution Provider in India. Over time, CMS has diversified and stands indisputably unrivaled in its line of business today. It has over 15 divisions, each one in strong in its own field, be it Smart cards, Traffic Systems, Security Systems, ERP Software, Printing Systems or Cash Management, etc.
When the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh led the country with its e-governance vision, CMS translated the vision into reality - The e-Seva Project, the poster-child of India's success in e-Governance.
A Name to Reckon With
Based on IDC’s survey conducted in 2004, CMS has been chosen by CIOs as the “Most Preferred IT services company”, enabling CMS to be a trusted partner in providing cost effective solutions and services. This is a fitting tribute to a man who endeavored to make CMS a name to reckon with in the IT industry.
