[edit] Sat Guru Ram Singh and Non Voilence of Gandhi
There is no doubt that it being taught that it was Sat Guru Ram Singh of Namdhari Sect of Punjab who had practiced non-voilence as a political tool for the first time. It is also being taught Sat Guru Ram Singh was a precursor to Gandhi.
However, it is also a strong opinion of some scholars that it was the Wang Bang Movement movement of 1905 where in the Indians practiced non-voilence as a political tool for the first time which Gandhi adopted during the Civil Disobedience Movement. It was during that movement that picketing, boycott of foreign clothes, temperance and avoidance of liquor were adopted as a political tool against the colonial rule. The Gandhi's form of political agitation was replica of similar methods latter. However, during Quit India Movement, he even justified the voilent means when he gave the war cry of Do or Die.
I believe that first practitioner of non-voilence was Guru Teg Bahadur. I think, his role as the first non-voilent leader of India should be evaluated. It was he, who had the ability to strike back with force but he instead opted for non-voilent protest in face of tyrannical role. I believe to non-voilence when you can hit back with arms and force is true form of non-voilence.
