The Ramsey Center was completed in April 1986 and is the largest facility of its type west of Charlotte, N.C. It contains 205,000 square feet of usable space, seats 7,826 for basketball and was built at a cost of $16.3 million. In addition to housing the athletic department’s administrative offices, coaches’ offices, team locker rooms, and meeting facilities, it also contains an auxiliary gymnasium, handball and racquetball courts, a communications center, a firing range and weight rooms.

Designed to accommodate cultural, entertainment, recreational, and athletic events, the Ramsey Center can seat up to 8,556 for major concerts. During its first 11 years of operation, nearly 1.5 million people attended activities in the facility. The past several years have demonstrated the facility’s flexibility as it has hosted a rodeo, numerous theatrical performances, a Broadway musical, graduation ceremonies, Mountain Heritage Day festivities, and musical concerts from such contemporary acts as the Charlie Daniels Band, Jars of Clay, Blessed Union of Souls, Tracy Byrd, Terri Clark, Aerosmith, Tim McGraw, and the Allman Brothers Band.
