Ramacharitam

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ramacharitam is a great epic poem written in Sanskrit in Arya metre by Sandhyakar Nandi during Pala Empire between the second half of the 11th and the first half of the 12th century CE. This work simultaneously narrates the story of the Ramayana and details the historical events in Bengal from the assassination of the Pala emperor Mahipala II by Divya, a rebel Kaivarta officer up to the reign of Madanapala in 215 verses, by using a figure of speech, the Shlesha (double-meaning words) in each verse.[1]

The poet, Sandhyakar Nandi, was born in a kayastha family of Vrihadvatu village near Pundravardhanapura in Varendra (North Bengal). He was grandson of Pinaka Nandi and son of Prajapati Nandi, the Sandhi-Vigrahika (minister of peace and war) of the Pala emperor Ramapala.[1]

A palm-leaf manuscript of the Ramacharitam discovered by Haraprasad Shastri is preserved in the museum of the Asiatic Society, Kolkata.
