Ram's Island, Northern Ireland
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ram’s Island (or McAlister Island as it is referred by the locals) is located approximately one mile offshore from Lennymore Bay and Sandy Bay on the eastern shore of Lough Neagh. Further geographical features can located via Ordnance survey, 6a. 3r. 28p.
It is nearly one mile long by a quarter of a mile wide and is the largest island on Lough Neagh. Notable features of the island are a round tower and the ruins of the O’Neill’s 19th century summer house. Its remote wilderness and lost in time qualities make Ram’s island a pleasant and attractive place to visit. The Island even played a part during WWII, as a flying boat base (ppRAF Sandy Bay]], utilizing the shelter offered by the Island from the westerly wind. A ferry service is available to take visitors to the island and around Lough Neagh.
More recently a successful attempt by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Lough Neagh Association resulted in 2,500 visitors to the Island in 2006.[1]
