Rajnigandha is the name of a Hindi movie released in 1974 and directed by Basu Chatterjee. It starred Amol Palekar, Vidya Sinha and Dinesh Thakur in the leading roles. "Rajnigandha" won the Best Picture at the Filmfare Awards in the year 1974, both the Popular Award and the Critics Award.
"Rajnigandha" was considered as a fresh outlook on cinema in 1974 where blockbusters were ruling over Bollywood. It helped the cast establish themselves in films. Actor Amol Palekar later on worked with Basu Chatterjee in subsequent films and Amol's hits include Chhoti Si Baat (1977), Chitchor (1977), Gharaonda (1980) and later Golmaal (1980). Vidya Sinha played marvellously in Pati, Patni Aur Woh (1979) opposite Sanjeev Kumar.
"Rajnigandha" has an impressive title song including a wonderful Mukesh single "Kai Baar Yuheen Dekha hai," for which he won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer. The film is worth watching and characterises an era of simple, short and low-budget movies that India made in the 1970s. Some Rajshri films follow the trend. The music director of this film was Salil Chawdhury, an extremely talented musician from Bengal. Music of this movie has always been considered exceptionally influencing.
