Rajnandgaon is the primary town in the Rajnandgaon District, in the state of Chhattisgarh, India. The population of the city is 143,727 (2001 census)[1]. It came into existence on 26th Jan' 1973, by way of division of district Durg[2]. The District headquarter Rajnandgaon is on the Bombay - Howrah line of southeastern railways. The National Highway 6 (Great Eastern Road) also passes through the town of Rajnandgaon. The nearest airport to the District is at Mana(Raipur), about 80 km away. This town is known as Sanskardhani of Chhattishgarh.

The Rajnandgaon was originally named as Nandgram. The palaces in the town of Rajnandgaon reveal their own tale of the rulers, their society and culture, and the splendid traditions of those times.[2]

Rajnandgaon is also known for education facilities provided here. The rich cultural heritage of the district is highlighted with Indira sangeet and kala vishwavidyalay at Khairagarh, a tehsil head quarter. The university has the distinction of being the only university in music and fine arts in India. The university offer various diploma, graduate and post graduate courses in vocal and instrumental music, dance forms, fine arts and folk dances. Many colleges offering courses in music and fine arts are affiliated to this university. Chhattisgarh's first privet dental college is located here. For Engineering studies there is Chhattishgarh Institute of Technology. Where studies in Computer science,Electronics & telecommunication & Mechanical Engineering stream are done. Rajnandgaon also has an Ayurvedic college. Other than these special fields Rajnandgaon has many colleges for studies of Science, Arts, Commerce etc. One such renown college is Digvijay college.

Rajnandgaon district has rich culture of sports, which has produced many national and international sports personalities. It boasts of having biggest stadium in Chhattisgarh, known as Digvijaya Stadium. Rajnandgaon is known as Nursery of Hockey. Unlike other cities of Chhattisgarh Hockey is quite popular game here. This city hosts The Mahant Sarveshwar Das memorial all India Hockey tournament, started in the year 1941. In which teams from Pakistan & Bangladesh also participate. Ranji trophy cricket matches are also held here.

A tehsil headquarter, Dongargarh is the main tourist as well as pilgrimage of the district. The famous temple of Goddess Bamleshwari, is on a hilltop of 1600 feet in the town of Dongargarh. This temple is referred as Badi Bamleshwari. Another temple at ground level is situated about 1/2 km from the main temple complex. This temple is referred as Chhoti Bamleshwari. Around many hundred thousands of people from, in and around Chattisgarh flock the shrine during the navratris of Kavar (during Dussera) and Chaitra (during Ramnavmi). During these navratris, melas (fair) are organised in the premises of the temple, which run 24 hours.

Diwali is perhaps the most well-celebrated festivals in the town, its known as the "festival of lights & crackers" for the honors of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. All non-resident who were born brought up in Rajnandgaon but went abroad gets together during this festival time. Ganesha Chaturthi is very aggressively celebrated with Lord Ganesha's idols installed on every corner, every street and every homes, with arrangements for lighting, flower-decoration. Similar to Mumbai Ganpati Visarjan is very Aggressively done in Rajnandgaon. On Visarjan Day people takes out Fabulous Jakki with chanting of "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Agley Baras Jaldi aa(Lord Ganesh, return soon next year).

Others good temples to visits in city are Gayatri Mandir, Sitla Mandir,Barfaani Ashram. You can even enjoy some Village-Culture(Framers-Culture), how they celebrate "Mohara Mela" (A fair organized on Bank of river Mohara), Bull-Run (Running competition of Bull), Mina Bazzar. One can get very cheap food here. One need only ONE Dollar to have entire day meal. Rajnandgaon is famous for following food items like Manav-Mandir "Allu Pooha", Moti-Halwai's "Rassgulla", Maharaj's "Pani-Puri", Khandelwal "Tea/Chai", Navrattan "Paan Center". Whosoever visits Rajnandgaon loves to try all these items.

As of 2001 India census[4], Rajnandgaon had a population of 143,727. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Rajnandgaon has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 65%. In Rajnandgaon, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
