RGNUL, Patiala was established in year 2006 by Punjab Government (Punjab Act No. 12 of 2006) as a public university. The 1st vice-chancellor is Dr. Gurjit Singh. The establishment of RGNUL has fulfilled a dream of having a centre of excellence in legal education in Punjab.
Currently, University is functioning from its transit campus at Mahendra Kothi, Patiala. The process of acquiring land for the university is underway. Soon, the university will shift to its permanent location at village Sidhuwal on Bhadson road, Patiala.
The university is affiliated to UGC and approved by Bar Council of India.
