Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology(RGIPT), Jais, Rai Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh[2] is a training and education institute that will render expert Technical and Management Training to the existing petroleum industry and will provide world class multi-disciplinary techno-management, academic programmes in the fields of petroleum for creating Human Resource of the future on a global basis to meet the emerging demand scenario in India and abroad.

The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MOP&NG), Government of India set up The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) at Jais, Dist. Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh through an Act of Parliament. RGIPT has been accorded the eminence of being an “ Institute of National Importance” along the lines of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). With the status of a deemed university, the Institute is empowered to award degrees in its own right. RGIPT is co-promoted as an energy domain specific institute by six leading Oil Public Sector Units (ONGC, IOCL, OIL, GAIL, BPCL and HPCL) in association with the Oil Industry Development Board (OIDB). The Institute is associated with leading International Universities/Institutions specializing in the domain of Petroleum Technology.

The prime objective of the Institute is to provide world class education, training, and research to roll out efficient human resources to meet the growing requirements of the Petroleum & Energy sector. The aspiration is to develop India as a global manpower hub for the entire Petroleum and Energy Sector.

RGIPT has an ambitious plan—to offer a total of 33 Bachelors Degree programs and Masters Degree programs, PG diploma courses and Doctoral programs in Petroleum Technology and Management in phases. From the academic year 2008-2009, NOIDA and Uttar Pradesh will impart the MBA program and Rae Bareli will impart two Technical programs.

  • Jul 04 2007: The Union Cabinet approved the setting up of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology at Jais in Rai Bareli District of UP. [4]
  • Nov 29 2007: The Rajya Sabha passed the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) Bill 2007. [5]
  • Dec 03 2007: The Lok Sabha passed the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) Bill 2007. [6]
  • 2008 - 2009: Start of Academic Session. [7]
  • 2015 - 2016: The Institute is planned to be self sufficient by the year 2015-20016. [8]
