Talk:Rail Fence Cipher

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The transposition described is a write-by-row, read-by-column route transposition, not a route transposition, as that term is used in, for example, Helen Gaines 1939 "Elementary Cryptanalysis."

Somewhere along the line someone on the web posted an incorrect description, and it's been passed along from site-to-site since. Most of them having copied from here.

The proper description is here: Amaerican Cryptogram Association - Railfence

This has been discussed at talk:transposition cipher.

I've corrected the page, and nobody seems to have objected to the new contents, so I don't think we have a controversy, anymore.
Though I'd appreciate it if someone who was better at wiki formatting would make the grid look a little prettier.
