Raising awareness
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Raising awareness is a common phrase advocacy groups use to justify a particular event, brochure or even the entire organization. Raising awareness refers to alerting the general public that a certain issue exists and should be approached the way the group desires. For example, a marriage equality group could tell the world same sex marriage should be allowed while an anti-gay group would argue to the world that same sex marriages should be banned. Both groups are "raising awareness" of the issue of same sex marriage but are offering two very different views on it.
Many people think that you cannot be fired from work in 26 states based solely on sexual orientation.[1] Raising Awareness would help in this situation by alerting the public that discrimination still exists in many states in public policy.
Since informing the populace of a public concern is often regarded as the first step to changing how the institutions handle it, raising awareness is often the first activity any advocacy group engages in.
