Raipur (Bengali: রায়পুর) is a town, community development bloc and assembly constituency in Bankura district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

[edit] Demographics

In the 2001 census, Raipur community development bloc had a total population of 151,274 of which 77,184 were males and 74,090 were females. Decadal growth for the period 1991-2001 was 15.39% for Raipur, against 13.79% in Bankura district. Decadal growth in West Bengal was 40.13%.[1]

Raipur Bloc had a total scheduled caste population of 32,478 and a scheduled tribe population of 42,058.[2]

Raipur is an intermediate panchayat in Bankura district, with Dhanara, Dheko, Dundar, Fulkusma, Mandalkuli, Melera, Motgoda, Raipur, Shyamsundarpur and Sonagara village panchayats under it.[3]

Upen Kisku of CPI(M) won the Raipur assembly seat, reserved for scheduled tribes, six times in a row. He defeated his nearest rival Bibhabati Tudu of AITC in 2006, Kshetra Mohan Handa, Independent, in 2001, Smritirekha Kisku of INC in 1996, Aditya Kisku, Independent, in 1991, Bhabatosh Soren of INC in 1987 and 1982. Apindra Kisku of CPI(M) defeated Gangadhar Murmu of INC in 1977.[4]

Raipur is part of Vishnupur (Lok Sabha constituency).[5]

As per order of the Delimitation Commission in respect of the delimitation of constituencies in the West Bengal, assembly constituency no. 250 Raipur (ST) will cover Raipur and Sarenga community development blocs. It will form part of parliamentary constituency no. 36 Bankura.[6]
