Rainbow Street

Rainbow Street, officially Abu Baker Al-Siddeeq Street[1], is a street in the historic area Jabal Amman, near the center of downtown Amman. As of 2006[1], a project has been instigated in which Rainbow Street will be transformed into a 'heritage attraction point', as proclaimed by the Greater Amman Municipality.[2] An article in Al-Ghad newspaper reported on the municipality's decision:
“A document at the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) admits that Amman cannot compete with other Arab cities through Neo-liberal urban restructuring projects such as the Abdali Development, as the competition to attract global capital and tourism between Amman, Beirut, Cairo, Tunis and cities in the Gulf is very tough”[2] [3]
The project will cost an estimated JD 5 Million.[2] Improvements such as more sidewalk space, movie theaters, road signs, and cobble stones will be part of the project. Rainbow Street is the location of numerous companies and shops, among them the Center for Studies on the Built Environment and the headquarters of the Jordan River Foundation.[1] The street is named after Rainbow Cinema near the intersection with the 1st Circle.[4]
