The Rainbow Bridge LP (falsely sub-titled "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" for the film Rainbow Bridge) was the second official posthumous release of Jimi Hendrix' music. This LP together with 'The Cry Of Love' would comprise the bulk of the most complete tracks, from a list of tracks Hendrix had written down for his latest (double) LP. The only four tracks from these two LP's not subsequently released on the 17-track CD 'First Rays of the New Rising Sun' were the following (all were from "Rainbow Bridge", given that ALL ten songs from "The Cry Of Love" are in fact included on "First Rays of the New Rising Sun": the instrumental 'Pali Gap'; the live 'Hear My Train a-Comin' (recorded at Berkeley Community Theater, Berkeley, California, May 30, 1970, 1st Show); one of the unreleased TTG studios recordings 'Look Over Yonder' (possibly the earliest song that Jimi had written, dating back to his days in Greenwich Village); and 'Star Spangled Banner' a solo instrumental, with many overdubs.

Conversely, "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" contained three songs that were not included on either "The Cry Of Love" or "Rainbow Bridge": the old withdrawn Band Of Gypsys single "Izabella" b/w "Stepping Stone" (drum tracks replaced by Mitch Mitchell); and the instrumental "Beginnings". These three were soon available on Side 2 of the 'War Heroes' LP, the last posthumous LP that Eddie Kramer would put his name to).

In summary, the combination of "The Cry Of Love", "Rainbow Bridge" and "War Heroes" provides all the songs that eventually would be released on 1997's "First Rays of the New Rising Sun", plus several that were not.

The Rainbow Bridge LP was only available on Reprise Records world wide due to contractual reasons. The album was released in October 1971 in the U.S. and in November 1971 in the U.K. and consisted of all new material. The album peaked at 15 on the U.S. Billboard album chart, and 16 in the U.K. chart. Although it appears to be a live performance album and is labelled "soundtrack", only one of the tracks was recorded live and not in Maui, "Hear My Train A Comin'" (also known as "Getting My Heart Back Together Again") was recorded live on May 30, 1970 at the Berkeley Community Center in California. All other songs are from studio sessions, including the single "Dolly Dagger". The single peaked at 74 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, it wasn't released in UK. The single's B-side was the studio version of "The Star Spangled Banner". It is noteworthy that Reprise listed Hendrix as a co-producer of this album. It is the last time they would give Hendrix credit. Even though Hendrix produced most of 'Electric Ladyland' and was also listed as a co-producer of 'The Cry Of Love', Reprise decided never to list Hendrix as a producer or co-producer on any albums released after Rainbow Bridge.
