Rainbow Bass

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rainbow Bass is a 6-string fretless bass guitar owned by Les Claypool of Primus. It was made by luthier Carl Thompson and is probably his most famous creation. It is made of strips of walnut, curly maple, padauk, purpleheart, ebony, and cocobolo glued in a horizontal stripe pattern.

The serial number is the birthdate of Carl Thompson himself. Initially there was a balance problem with the body of the bass, which Thompson fixed by completely rebuilding the bass. On the video for "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" by Primus, Claypool plays the old Rainbow Bass with the horn cut down temporarily for better balance.
