Rain Phoenix (born November 21, 1972) is an American actress, musician, and singer.
Phoenix was born Rain Joan of Arc Bottom[1] in Crockett, Texas. Her mother, Arlyn Sharon (née Dunetz), was born in the Bronx, New York to Jewish parents from Hungary and Russia.[2][3][4][5] Her father, John Lee Bottom, was a lapsed Catholic from Fontana, California.[2] In 1968, Phoenix's mother left her family and moved to California, meeting Phoenix's father while hitch-hiking. They married in 1969 and joined the religious cult the Children of God, working as missionaries and fruit pickers in South America. Phoenix has four siblings: two brothers, actors Joaquin and the late River Phoenix, and two sisters, Summer and Liberty. When they returned to the United States, the family adopted the surname "Phoenix". Phoenix changed her name to "Rainbow" as a child actor, deeming 'Rain' to be "too dreary". She returned to her original name as a teenager.
Phoenix fronts the band papercranes as leader singer and lyricist. Her husband Michael Tubbs plays guitar for the group and her sister, Summer, is a former member of the band. Her sister, Liberty, also sometimes sings backup for the band. Papercranes has their first album, Vidalia, as well as an EP available for purchase on their site. Guest musicians include Dermot Mulroney, Libby Lavella and Flea. Other music credits include touring with the Red Hot Chili Peppers as backup singer on their One Hot Minute tour, recording with R.E.M. as a backup singer, and joining Angela McCluskey as an opening act for R.E.M.
