Sood claims to have taken an interest in computers at the age of 11, having disassembled and painted his first computer—an Apple IIc—before even turning it on.[4]
He graduated high school in 1991 and then enrolled in Mount Royal College. "Bored after high school" and uninspired by the computer science courses, he stopped attending college after the first week.[5]

Rahul founded the company in 1991 in Calgary and in approximately 1992 purchased a "heritage home more than a century old."[2][5] In 1999 his brother Ravi Sood joined the company. By 2004, Rahul notes "there was a ceiling to [VoodooPC's] growth."[5]

On September 28, 2006, Hewlett-Packard announced "the integration of VoodooPC."[8] As Sood states on his blog, he and his brother Ravi Sood had been considering the strategy for VoodooPC since "mid 2005," including discussions with Taiwanese ODMs and Dell Computers.[6] Rahul has claimed the "treasure trove of product innovations" from HP Labs to be a major influence in his decision.[8]
As stated in the August 2007 version of his official "Executive Biography," Sood's responsibility at HP is technical strategy, product vision and "commercializing intellectual property" from HP Labs.[2]

Sood currently lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and is an avid cyclist.[9] He is interested in "offer[ing] wider access to healthcare services" and would like to get involved in developing "tech toys for children with autism."[2]
