Raghnall mac Somhairle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ragnall mac Somhairlidh (Anglicisation: Ranald son of Somerled) (sometimes referred to as Reginald) (d.1207) was a son of Somerled and Ragnhildis, daughter of Olaf I of Man.[1] Ranald succeeded his father, inheriting lands in Kintyre and Islay.[1] He drove his brother Angus out of Bute and Arran. After the death of Angus, Ranald and his other brother Dougal held roughly equal possessions.[1]

In about 1180 Ranald granted a charter to the monastery of Paisley.[1] In this charter he was styled Lord of the Isles. Ranald was also styled King of the Isles and Lord of Argyll.[1]

Ranald's Arms are described as: "In the middle of the seal on one side a ship filled with men-at-arms; on the reverse side, the figure of an armed man on horseback with a drawn sword in his hand."[1]

Ranald built the Saddell Abbey, and had granted to the monks the lands of Glensagadul and Balebean in Kintyre and Cesken in Arran.[1] His wife was possibly a daughter of the Earl of Moray.[2]. Ranald died in 1207.[1]
