Raphael "Raffi" Torres (b. 8 October 1981 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian professional hockey forward of Mexican and Peruvian descent in the National Hockey League who has played for the New York Islanders and who currently plays for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League.
[edit] Playing career
Torres was drafted in the 1st Round, 5th overall by the New York Islanders in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He decided to pursue his hockey career through the ranks of the OHL rather than playing university or college hockey. Thus, in his draft year, he was playing for the Brampton Battalion where he spent his entire major junior career. After one more year in Brampton Torres made the jump to the American Hockey League playing both wings for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
As the New York Islanders lost some players to injury, Torres was soon called up to play for them. He split his first two years between Bridgeport in the AHL and the New York Islanders of the NHL. Mike Milbury later dealt him to the Edmonton Oilers along with Brad Isbister in exchange for defenceman Janne Niinimaa. Torres only played one full season for Edmonton before the NHL lockout, during which he played for Edmonton's farm team, the Edmonton Road Runners.
In the 2005–06 season Torres was part of the Edmonton Oilers team that made it to the playoffs and eventually lost the Stanley Cup final to the Carolina Hurricanes in seven games. Raffi Torres recently appeared as a guest on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where he was jokingly described as the most dangerous type of hockey player: Mexican.
