Rafael Schmitz (born December 17, 1980 in Blumenau) is a Brazilian footballer who is currently playing for Lille. Schmitz is a commanding central defender who is good in the air but also very agile and has good passing ability. Schmitz stands six feet tall and weighs 12.4 stones.
Schmitz joined Birmingham City on a season-long loan for 2007–08 on 6 July 2007.[1] He made his Birmingham debut as a very late substitute on 15 September 2007 against Bolton Wanderers, and his full debut on 20 October 2007 against Manchester City in place of the injured Johan Djourou. He returned to Lille after the end of the 2007–08 season.
