Television New Zealand broadcast Radio with Pictures from 1977 to 1986 as a programme on popular and alternative music, presented initially by Barry Jenkins (Dr. Rock), followed by Phil O'Brien, and then by Karyn Hay and finally by Dick Driver.
The initial content was mostly alternative music, and music videos that couldn't be aired during prime time for censorship reasons. This was due primarily to Barry Jenkins' (the NZ version of John Peel) passion for the new, emerging sounds of the day. It echoed the work he had been doing on his NZ radio broadcast. After his departure, the program expanded on the genres played, and gradually the "alternative" music itself became in a sense more "mainstream".
Both Karen Hay and Dick Driver were from a musical background themselves, both having been members of one or more bands in years gone by.
Before stereo television broadcasts were commonly available, a simulcast was available on the student radio stations which are now known as b.net.
