Radio Volta

Radio Volta is an internet radio station based in West Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States. The station's studio is located at the LAVA Zone, and is a project of the Independent Media Center of Philadelphia. Radio Volta is financially supported by modest monthly dues paid by its programmers, as well as grants.

During the 2000 Republican National Convention, the fledgling Philly IMC ran a web radio station called WR2K, which featured news produced by activists involved with the protests surrounding the convention. Shortly after the convention ended, several local radio activists, some of whom had worked previously with the West Philadelphia pirate radio station Radio Mutiny, formed Radio Volta. The founders of the station named it after American anarchist Voltairine de Cleyre, who lived in Philadelphia. The station began webcasting on November 7, 2000, also the day of the U.S. presidential election.

Beginning in 2001, Radio Volta simulcast its signal on the FM band, under an agreement with Philadelphia community radio station WPEB (88.1 FM). This arrangement ended acrimoniously in 2003 when WPEB unilaterally chose to stop broadcasting Radio Volta's content.

Radio Volta moved to its current studio in April 2004.
