Radio Kaleidoscope

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Radio Kaleidoscope was a pirate radio station, based in Benfleet, Essex that commenced broadcasting on the medium wave in the aftermath of the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act in 1967 that effectively outlawed offshore stations. [1]

As well as on-air activity station personnel actively supported other stations including Radio Caroline which continued to broadcast offshore despite the new law.[1]

The station added a short wave transmitter in 1969.[1]

The station also forged links with the UK Underground, was advertised extensively in the Underground Press. It's name became so well-known that the staff, upon arrival at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, were immediately granted backstage access. [1]

The authorities caught up with Radio Kaleidoscope later in 1970. A raid on their base seriously curtailed operations and the station's activities petered out in 1972.[1]

In 1973 Colin King recruited a renegade faction from Radio Jackie who revived the station and began broadcasting to south London.[2]

The station finally ceased broadcasting in 1976. [2]
