Talk:Raccoon City
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ok I think this entry needs to separate into "Raccoon City in Resident Evils 0,2, and 3" and "Raccoon City in Resident Evil: Apocalypse.
- I agree. The article seems to favor the films way too much, even though the RE series is a video game first and a movie second. There's some info in the Biohazard Archives, which I could translate and put here. Jonny2x4 17:00, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Spencer Mansion Versus Looking Glass House
The Spencer Mansion in the Resident Evil games and the mansion in the Resident Evil Movie are two different places. The Spencer Mansion is an old structure from the late sixtie or early seventies. It is filled with many old fashioned traps and secrets designed by Umbrella leaders from that era. It is a research and testing lab. The Mansion is Resident Evil the Movie is the Looking Glass House. That name is from the script is never uttered in the movie, but the main character, Alice, goes down a "rabbit hole" on the mansions grounds and confronts the "red queen." Paul WS Anderson knows this is not the Spencer Mansion. The LGH is large and modern, in good repair, and serves as an enterance to the hive under raccoon. In Resident Evil Apocalypse, we meet a Jill Valentine who has already encountered zombies before the outbreak. Although they do not go into it, it is highly probable that the LGH was still in operatation after the Spencer incident and Jill Valentine's disgrace.
The weapon used on Raccoon City is a regular fission bomb, not a neutron bomb. A neutron bomb kills living things with radiation but leaves buildings intact. In Resident Evil Nemesis and Resident evil Apocalypse we see the bomb causing a blast, fireball, and mushroom cloud.
Ahh, but most of the city in RE: Apocalypse was left intact, albeit with some scarring, thus making the bomb a neutron missile. G. Freeman- July 2nd, 2006 10:01 ET
[edit] Nuke picture and caption
The picture and caption are spoilers, and I think they should be removed, or put into a spoiler part of the article.
- I took the liberty of replacing the "Blast.jpg" with a shot of Raccoon City from RE3, since it's more appropiate for this article than something from the films. Jonny2x4 17:00, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Possible State Location
A Game Informer issue in 2004 (can't remember the month, sorry) featured a question in their monthly "Gamer IQ" quiz which said that Raccoon City was located in Colorado. I'm not sure where they got that from. 67.165.87.40 20:46, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah Ive always remembered that. Mainly since I have no liking of Colorado. --Psi edit
-
- The fact that its location has always been referred to as the "mid-west" brings to mind Ohio, Illinois, etc. I'm not entirely sure why Colorado, West Virginia, and the like are continuously brought into the equation. --AWF

- In the 2nd movie, during the zooming out scene at the end, it appeared the city is right around Cincinnati or Indianapolis. -Ulairix

- Sounds like original research, or, more likely Game Informer just picked a spot where they think Raccoon City most likely is. Colorodo has never been confirmed by Capcom as the actual location. I'm removing the sentence "It is said to be located somewhere in northern Colorado." for now as it's very misleading and may lead some to take it as a fact when in actuality its no truer than the dozen other possible locations people have come up with. Secondly, that rumour isn't even referenced. If anyone insists on keeping it please change the sentence to "It is rumored to be located somewhere in northern Colorado." or something to that effect for a little more clarity and reference it.

- Also, I just wanted to point out that Raccoon City is by no means a metropolis and to call it that is incorrect. "Metropolis" is a very specific term meaning a major city usually with a population of over a million; Los Angeles for example. Raccoon City has 100,000+ people, which is actually pretty small as far as cities go and definitly does not qualify as metropolis. Raccoon may have been a metropolis in the non-canon films, but in the video game it's usually portrayed as a "small mid-western city". I'm not going to edit that out for now until some more users respond. --Life is like a box of chocolates 10:54, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
- I have changed "metropolis to the more generic descriptor of "city". Raccoon City, with its likely population being 100-200,000 persons does not constitute a metropolis. -- D-Katana 13:51, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Could someone cite the Cumberland, MA thing? It sounds like original research/fancruft, and I always figured Raccoon was no more based on a real city than was Springfield in The Simpsons. Teflon Don 05:47, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
Cumberland Maryland has a general shape and look that resembles Raccoon City. It has a nearby mountain range, has a highway system going through it, and has a generally moderate population.- G.Freeman, July 1st, 2006 10:03 ET.
It's simple, about the possible locations of Raccoon City may be, that is if you are referring to a realistic perspective. I have changed much of the location part, and added images and real reference to this subject. It's not a fact that Game Informer just "picked a place". I am sure they had thought about it and did some reasearch of their own when they had decided to choose Colorado as a possible state that Raccoon City could be in for their game quiz. Colorado is mostly covered by the Rockey Mountains, is considered "mid-western", and is known to have dense and secluded forest evironments. As for the city of Chicago being a possible "Raccoon City", I have taken the liberty of erasing that, because I recall in Resident Evil 2 that Umbrella had a brance based in Chicago. I don't underdstand how Raccoon City could be based off of that city when there is a brance of Umbrella's located there. In exchange for the previous information, I have added real research of more than one town that could almost pass as a real "Raccoon City".
Further more, I would like to point this out: I am having a hard time finding any pictures of the Arklay Mountains from the beginning scenes of Resident Evil 0 and the Remake, or of the painiting of the mountains in Resident Evil 3 to prove that the mountains do in fact look close to the Appalachian Mountains. The only reference I have is to view these facts in the games themselves. This also goes for the second Resident Evil movie's DVD deleted scenes. You can only view those facts on special feature DVD. There are no resouces online to prove this. However, if some are able to find them, I would appreciate it if those people would share their information and resouces. - and I wouldn't mind if people would possibly want to take the liberty of changing my Spelling, English and Grammar on the Raccoon City page. Since I know I am not the best at it. - *.:.`ShadowFox` S.T.A.R.S..:.* 03:10, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
Hey.. isn't comparing raccoon city to Centralia a bit off? Silent Hill has the underground fires.. not Raccoon City.. -nalesean
Not really. I realize Centralia does have the underground mine fires yes, and I do understand that Raccoon City doesn't, and was destoryed by the T-virus that infected the fleas and the rats in the sewers. However, both were destoryed by natural disasters, both towns were destoryed very quickly and both of the towns' disasters were caused by accidential events. Also, I grew up around Centralia, so I know how the town had pan out. In essense, I am unaware of any other town in reality that could compare to the events of Raccoon City, like Centralia. - *.:.`ShadowFox` S.T.A.R.S..:.* 23:07, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
Okay, someone had erased the whole section of the location of Raccoon City just to prove a point. This I find to be disrespectful to the other editors of the page, when most of us go out of our way to provide the information and facts for this section. -.- There is no need to delete the whole thing. Instead, try fitting your thoughts in with the information that is already there, and if there is incorrect English and Grammar, and false information... Sure, change it. But at least attempt to stick with the original writer's thoughts and research.
Also, I like to point this out, I am having a hard time editing Wikipedia when I change some pages around. So, it's not always my poor English and Grammar skills that have the pages look a little messy. If anyone can fix this, then be my guest. I would appreciate it. :) - *.:.`ShadowFox` S.T.A.R.S..:.* 16:38, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
In Resident Evil: Extinction, Raccoon City is clearly Detroit, Michigan. Phizzy 04:43, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
OK OK OK!...
- Springfield is based partialy on Springfield, Illinois
- The ending of Res 3 said the death toll surpassed the 100,000 mark...That could have included soldiers, it may not have included civilians who escaped and like registered or something.
- The movie location is different, they can't make a cgi map from scratch! they just put down the map of somewere near mountains... or the map of a big city to make it look like a metropolis.
- How can u include Illinois in a list of possible locations... last i heared, illinois was flat, not covered in MountainsOsirisV (talk) 05:46, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] The end of Raccoon City
There is a fundamental misunderstanding of the mechanism of EMP in this section of the entry. I've removed all the dicussion as to the effects of weapon type and altitude as they were, in my view, very misguided (even within a fictional setting). I would suggest that anyone wishing to discuss as to why the protagonist's helicopter wasn't downed by the EMP from the blast read the wikipedia entry on EMP thoroughly before adding more.

According to the article, the ending in Outbreak is considered canon, but according to the videos in RE4 and Umbrella Chronicles it is a nuclear blast that destroys the city. I think the article should be changed to represent this as the true plot. The outbreak series was an offshoot and should not be considered part of the main plot. Chrono951 (talk) 20:14, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
You ar incorrect, Umbrella Chronicles does not show a nuke as a file in the game (which is included on this page someware) says that it was a conventional missile (most likly a fuel air bomb) that deastroys raccoon city. This is also included in the main article. There is no set destruction for raccoon city it changes with every game. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.161.49.66 (talk) 17:00, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
I am correct. The intro movie for RE4 clearly shows a nuclear explosion hitting the city, delivered by a single warhead. There is a file in Umbrella Chronicles that clearly states "In compliance, on October 1st, 1998, the military launched a new type of strategic missile into the heart of the city. Raccoon City, with its 100,000 inhabitants, was forever wiped from the face of the earth.". A strategic missile is usually associated with a nuclear device. Also, a nuclear device is the only thing that fits these requirements and could cause the complete destruction of an entire city. Outbreak is an offshoot and not part of the main storyline. The events in RE4 should be the final decider and they clearly show a nuclear explosion, preceded by a shockwave. 192.88.124.204 (talk) 19:16, 19 April 2008 (UTC) The Preceding comment was mine, forgot to login. Chrono951 (talk) 19:21, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
You are incorrect yet again as strategic missile is only used to discribe conventional missiles and weapons where as thermal nuclear is used to describe nukes, and a large fuel air bomb is fully capable of doing the damage shown in RE3 RE4 and REUC. Also the files says its a new bomb as fuel air bombs are relivtivly new weapon it is by far the most likily answer.
Where is your proof for this information? Also you cannot dispute opening movie of RE4 where a nuclear explosion, in the form of a mushroom cloud is shown. Also according to the articles here on Wikipedia, Fuel Air Bombs can be powerful, but even the biggest, a MOAB, is only 1/1000 as powerful as an atomic bomb, not enough to destroy an entire city. Also, according to a Google search, "Probably the broadest of these distinctions is strategic versus tactical weapons. In general terms, a strategic weapon is one designed for mass destruction like a nuclear missile. A tactical weapon, on the other hand, typically carries a conventional high explosive warhead." Chrono951 (talk) 18:07, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Raccoon City was nuked. End of story. Check "strategic" in your dictionary, if it's decent it will bring up the difference between Strategic Missiles and Tactical missiles. (Same IP, same network, different person agreeing with Chrono951) 192.88.124.204 (talk) 18:33, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Since there have been no proof to the contrary, I am assuming that the ending will be the nuclear one and will continue to revert the page to that edit until more evidence of said conventional destruction is delivered or a moderator intervenes. Chrono951 (talk) 20:31, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Real prototype
Is there a really existing prototype of Raccoon City? Just wondered if it was one of these American towns all named Racine, which suit rather well (approximately same population and size, for example).
Its hard to tell because the actual layout and size of the city changes from game to game. In the earlier games, it appears to be a smaller town with a pop around 100,000, but in the later games, specifically the RE4 intro vid that shows the city, it appears as a major metropolis with skyscrapers and such. Chrono951 (talk) 19:39, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Wellall it said what that the death toll surpassed the 100,000 mark... who knows how many would have left the town in that week + bit.OsirisV (talk) 14:54, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Assasination?
"(Umbrella Scientist James Marcus released the T-Virus at the mansion after being assassinated by Albert Wesker and William Birkin. Marcus had planned to release it into Raccoon City, but was killed by Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen in the Umbrella Training Facility in the Arklay Mountains.)"
How could Marcus release the virus after being assasinated by Wesker and Birkin. Also, how could he then be killed by Chambers and Coen...? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 35.11.210.109 (talk) 17:48, 14 February 2007 (UTC).
Easy... He was assassinated by Umbrella Soldiers escorted By Birkin + Wesker under Spencers orders... he + his research is dumped somewere. The Queen Leech survived and found his body... It entered his body (mouth open) and began to infect + merge. Howether to revive Marcus, it took 10 years. When Marcus is revived, he attacks the training facility, the Research Facility and the Mountainside in general. Rebecca + Coen kill the revived Marcus by shooting him in a weaked state (when in his mutated Leech form he cannot survive under light), which causes him to fall over into a pit that just happened 2 be there. Killing him...againOsirisV (talk) 05:58, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Clean up
This thing needs clean up, aside from the above error:
"But as of Resident Evil 4 when Umbrella went under the U.S government took over the facility."
and
"Umbrella also sent in several Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (U.B.C.S.) squads for search-and-rescue missions on the 26th and 27 September, which ended disastrously for the survivors."
It's not just grammer. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 35.11.210.109 (talk) 17:59, 14 February 2007 (UTC).
- I cleaned it up a little just now. Here's what I did:
- removed repeated hotlinking to articles that have already been hotlinked (Umbrella Corporation in particular; two links in the whole article will suffice)
- removed all the date/month/year links
- minor clean up of certain sentences
- cleaned up the location lists
- What I didn't do was place links to some of the characters' respective articles/sub-articles/bios whatever, as I noticed that a few minor characters are missing those links. 07:51, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
== Nuclear vs Conventional destruction of the city ==
I have read the article on EMP as suggested by one the editors here, and I still can't understand how Barry's chopper managed to survive the EMP and radiation range if it was a nuclear warhead that was destructed on Racoon city.
Can anyone please care to explain? For the conventional weapons, in my opinion, the point that the US would never use nuclear on their land is a good point, coupled with the fact that small traces of the virus samples survived, this may have not been the case if it really was a nuclear device as the radiation might have overtaken it. Also, it would make sense if Barry's chopper survived the explosion just with a little hitch, as well as Outbreak characters making it out alive right at the zero hour.
Capcom must've had a good reason to change the destruction type in File 2, I think the destruction has been retcon and conventional bombing via multiple rockets should be made official in the Raccon City incident article.
Well...on the epilogue cutscene on file #1... when that guy shows the other guy the photo... Look arefully at the bottom right corner... Multiple smaller craters...Now look at the "Heaven's Gate" cutscene in File #2... You seen most of them striking the same 3 target locations with several missing the main group... This makes File #1 + 2 canonOsirisV (talk) 06:11, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
In a file in Umbrella Chronices, apparently the US developed a "ney type of" convential weapon. Well... according to the Resident Evil Wikia (1700 articles + raising)OsirisV (talk) 06:11, 31 December 2007 (UTC) Superscript text
Which file exactly I haven’t found any files that say anything other then missiles were used in the bombing of Racoon City. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.132.130.95 (talk) 20:20, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- In Umbrellas End. A File says...:
Even after the mansion incident ended, the “cannibal disease” (T-Virus) had spread to Raccoon City, plunging it into a state of panic. The city was quarantined, while R.P.D. officers and U.B.C.S. soldiers attempted to rescue its citizens. The situation grew more and more desperate, and the possibility of the virus spreading beyond the quarantine was growing. The U.S. government was concerned and called a nationwide conference to discuss the next step. They formulated a plan for the complete eradication of the city. In compliance, on October 1st, 1998, the military launched a new type of strategic missile into the heart of the city. Raccoon City, with its 100,000 inhabitants, was forever wiped from the face of the earth.OsirisV (talk) 19:33, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
I just saw the cut scene at the end of Raccoon's Destruction in Umbrella Chronicles. Capcom have change how Raccoon was destroyed again back to a nuke. You see only one missle fly over raccoon city and air burst as a nuke would. It then shows clips form the end cut scene form RE3 and Outbreak. Can’t Capaom just stick to one method of destruction and not keep changing it in every game. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.143.127.243 (talk) 17:49, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- Maybe they didn't want to make more cutscenes? Or... maybe there was a Nuke coming from the west... and Missiles coming from the North-East or something... and they all just happen to hit at the same time.OsirisV (talk) 14:07, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Post-AFD cleanup
Now that the AFD has resulted in no consensus, we should begin to clean this article:
- Remove original research and speculation. I've already started by removing a large portion of text debating the possibility of the destruction of the city being thermonuclear or conventional. Please stick to what is covered by reliable sources.
- Pare down excessive plot. This article repeats the plot of the games in too much detail. Leave the plot synopsis to the article on the games and let this article focus on the city instead.
- Add out-of-universe content and keep in-universe content in check. This is related to the plot issue—the article needs to focus on real-world information, such as the development process of the city by the designers, real-world influences, critical reception, etc. Paring down the plot will be a big help with this.
- Add sources. Particularly reliable secondary sources, if available. This does not include open wikis or user-written FAQs, such as what one would find at GameFAQs.
