Rachel Caine is a pen name of Roxanne Longstreet Conrad, an American writer of science fiction, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and horror novels. She also publishes media tie-in novels as Julie Fortune.

Caine grew up in west Texas and graduated from Socorro High School in El Paso, Texas, in 1980. She is a 1985 graduate of Texas Tech University with a bachelor's degree in accounting (with a minor in music).

Rachel Caine has been writing and publishing novels and short stories since 1991. She is a former professional musician who has the distinction of having played with such musical legends as Henry Mancini, Peter Nero, and John Williams.[1] She's also an avid movie buff, a TV-holic, and says she "prefers a good stout Guinness to wimpy American beers."

Caine does most of her writing in a coffee shop near her home.[2] She says she finds Caramel Mocha "very inspirational." Caine listens to music while she writes, the playlist changing from project to project.

In addition to a daunting writing schedule, she maintained a full-time job as a Director of Corporate Communications for a large multinational company before retiring in late 2007 to write full-time.[3] She lives in north Texas with her husband, artist Cat Conrad.

[edit] Upcoming works

On August 8, 2007, Caine reported on her blog that the seventh novel of her Weather Warden series, The Friction Layer, is "finished and submitted." She noted that this title is likely to change before publication, and this has indeed been proven correct, as the title is now Gale Force. Her recent short fiction includes a short story for the upcoming anthology My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon edited by P. N. Elrod.[6]

On August 24, 2007, Caine announced on her mailing list and her blog that she has sold a four-book series called "Outcast Season" to Roc Books. Describing the upcoming series, she said "This series is a spin-off of the Weather Warden series, and will follow the story of a Djinn who's been cut off from her fellows, and must rely on the goodwill of a Warden partner for her very existence. Along the way, she has to face enemies and challenges that the Djinn can't, or won't face themselves." The first book in the series will be titled Undone and is due out in late 2008.[7]

On May 26th, 2008, Caine announced in her blog that the fifth novel to The Morganville Vampires series, "Lord of Misrule", is expected to be released in December 2008 or January 2009.
