Race Against Time (Stephen Lewis)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Race Against Time: Searching for Hope in AIDS-Ravaged Africa is a book by Stephen Lewis, former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. It is an adaptation of his Massey Lecture series presented in 2005.
The book is divided into five chapters, four focusing on a specific problems faced by the continent of Africa and the fifth offering suggestions for solutions. Although focusing on his time spend as special envoy, he uses past experiences to help broaden the context. Lewis is often critical of the bureaucracy he experienced in the United Nations and other diplomatic circles, but is able to focus positive criticism towards people and initiatives that he feels are making an impact.
Originally published in 2005 by House of Anansi Press, it was reprinted in 2006 with a new afterword by the author. In late 2006, it was featured as part of the CBC Editor's Choice podcasts.
