IMDb profile

Rabbit Romeo is a Merrie Melodies cartoon staring Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd. The film is notable as one of the few parings of Bugs and Elmer in which Bugs is not hunted throughout the entire picture.

[edit] Plot

Elmer receives a letter from his Uncle to take care of a Slobovian rabbit (Millicent) until he arrives. He also learns that he will receive 500 bucks. When he opens the box he discovers that the rabbit is a huge, unattractive rabbit. Then we see Elmer talking to a doctor saying that Slobovian rabbits get lonely and need another rabbit to talk to he decides to hunt a rabbit. Then we see Elmer catching Bugs. Then when Bugs arrives Milly falls in love with him and tries to kiss him. As she tries to kiss him bugs puts a fish in front of him. As she tries to do it again Bugs runs away. Milly assumes it is seek and go hide and she finds him. As Bugs runs away Milly pulls him back in.

Bugs explains that women do not chase men in America (although he rolls his eyes at his own statement). As he states about a courtship she says now we make marriage. Bugs jumps out of the window but Elmer brings him back in. Then she does a traditional dance from her country (which she calls "Slobovian rock & roll"). As Bugs does it he runs out the door Milly asks him to snuggle. Bugs then declares that the they elope. Milly agrees. Bugs takes a rolled up sheet and holds it out the window for Milly to slide down, but lets go of the sheet as she is doing so ("Butterfingers!"). As Milly pounds on the door, Bugs goes and tells Elmer that Uncle Judd is at the door and Elmer slips into a rabbit costume. Then he discovers that it is Millicent and then tells Bugs he does not like him but likes Elmer then Elmer runs and Milly chases him and the cartoon concludes with Bugs saying "ain't I the little matchmaker."

[edit] Censorship

  • On CBS and the syndicated Merrie Melodies show: The part where Bugs uses a goldfish to shield himself from Millicent's kisses was cut to remove the part where the goldfish is put back in the fishbowl, the goldfish takes out a pistol, returns inside his toy castle, and shoots himself (implied by the bubbles surfacing and making a gunshot sound when popped).
  • On The WB!: Bugs uses an electric fan to protect himself from Millicent's kisses, but her mouth destroys the fan. Millicent then says, "Mmm, not bad for a beginner!"
