The city is located on the eastern bank of the White Nile, about 260 km south of Khartoum. On the other side of the river is the city of Kusti.

Rabak was made the capital of the White Nile state in 1994.

In the city there is a cement processing company called the Nile Cement Company, which produced in 2001 50.200 tons und im 2002 41.000 tons. There is also a calcite mine nearby,
