In his underage career, Clarke won one MacRory Cup and one Ulster Minor Football Championship.[1] He was soon promoted to the Armagh senior panel. After they won the 2002 All-Ireland Championship, Clarke was named Young Footballer of the Year. After making his championship debut in May 2002 Clarke scored in 7 of Armagh's 8 championship games. He contributed 3 valuable points in the 2002 All Ireland Final.

As a result of his performances with Armagh in the 2006 Ulster Senior Football Championship, he was named as the 2006 Irish News Ulster Allstars player of the year. It was the second time he had been selected on the Ulster Allstars team and the first time hew was announced as the player of the year. He was awarded a GAA All-Star for his 2006 performances with Armagh. He was also voted the 5th best looking county player in the GAA.[citation needed] Clarke missed the 2007 season due to a crucia<te ligament injury suffered in the 2006 season.

He has also played International Rules Football for Ireland against Australia.[2]
